Mixtures of different polyolefins may be made by direct, preferably simultaneous polymerization of one or more polymerizable olefins using two or more transition metal containing active polymerization catalyst systems, at least one of which contains cobalt or iron completed with selected ligands. The polyolefin products may have polymers that vary in molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, crystallinity, or other factors, and are useful as molding resins and for films.

Substituted cyclopentenes, such as alkyl cyclopentenes, are polymerized by selected -imine complexes of nickel and palladium. The polymers are useful as molding resins or elastomers. Also disclosed herein are novel catalysts for the polymerization of cyclopentenes to form novel higher melting homopolycyclopentenes.

An olefin polymerization catalyst component is prepared by making a solution of a transition metal complex of a selected tridentate ligand, adsorbing the complex onto a silica or silica-alumina support, and separating the solution from the supported transition metal complex component, which is storage stable. Olefin polymerizations with this component may be carried out with high catalyst productivity using cocatalysts such as trialkylaluminum compounds.
