Abstract:

Vane members are movably mounted on the hulls of watercraft to serve steering and stabilization functions. Several embodiments are disclosed, some of which rotate between extended and shielded positions, others of which fold to vary the angle at which they extend from their associated hull, and still others of which both rotate and fold to facilitate storage alongside planar hull portions. Both shaft and surface bearing vane mounting systems are described. In preferred practice, the vanes are used on hydrofoil-carrying semidisplacement ships, and the provision of stowably mounted hydrofoils, planing surfaces, and wave form generators on such ships is also disclosed.

Abstract:

An aerial missile is provided with a pair of vane members mounted on opposite sides of the body thereof in recesses provided therefor. Each vane member includes a planar elongated mounting section disposed in a recess; each of such vane member mounting sections being rotatable about an axis passing perpendicularly therethrough adjacent an end thereof. Such axes intersect at a point on the longitudinal plane of symmetry of such missile body and outwardly and downwardly diverge therefrom. Such vane member mounting sections are selectively rotatable after deployment from sheltered positions within such recesses to an operating position about the axis passing through each into and out of alignment with the flowstream moving rearwardly alongside the body of such missile as the same moves forwardly through the air to concurrently serve steering and rolling functions or to serve a pitching function.

Abstract:

One or more hollow elongated structures are mounted on the underside of a boat to provide wave-forming lift surfaces. Each structure defines a chamber which substantially parallels the length of the boat. Each structure has a pointed, closed forward end, an open rearward end, and an outer surface which tapers, at least in part, to provide a smooth transition between the ends and to define a planing surface that increases in area as it approaches the rearward end. When the boat is at rest, water enters the chamber and helps to stabilize the boat. When the boat gets underway, the chamber empties and the planing action of the outer surface lifts the boat and reduces its wetted surface area. Emptying water from the chamber is facilitated by ducting air or exhaust gases into the chamber. Ducting exhaust gases into the chamber has the advantages of muffling exhaust noise and reducing engine back pressure when the boat is underway, thereby enhancing engine performance.

Abstract:

A displacement hull ship has one or more elongated hull structures underlying and supporting a deck structure. The hull structures each have a pair of elongated side walls extending longitudinally of the ship. The side walls have relatively widely spaced upper portions and relatively narrowly spaced lower portions joined by inclined intermediate portions. The lower portions define opposite sides of a displacement keel. When the ship is at rest, its displacement water line is near the juncture of the upper and intermediate portions. Hydrofoils are provided at submerged locations on the displacement keel to raise the ship in the water when the ship is underway such that the cruising water line is near the juncture of the lower and intermediate portions. A plurality of such hull structures may be arranged side-by-side to support a common deck structure. Some of the hydrofoils may be advantageously located between adjacent side-by-side hull structures.
