Abstract:

A method and circuit is provided for preloading a branch prediction unit within a microprocessor. In one embodiment of the method, a branch history storage device such as branch history shift register is written with a predetermined multibit predicter in response to the microprocessor receiving and executing a special write branch history storage device instruction for writing the predetermined multibit predicter into the branch history storage device. The branch history storage device is contained within a prediction circuit of the microprocessor, and generally the contents of the branch history storage device is used in the process of predicting the results of executing conditional branch instructions prior to their execution. Once the branch history storage device is preloaded with the predetermined multibit predicter, the prediction circuit predicts the result of a conditional branch instruction using the predetermined multibit predicter stored in the history device after the conditional branch instruction is received by the microprocessor and before the conditional branch instruction is executed. In one embodiment, the predetermined multibit predicter is an operand of the write history storage device instruction received and executed by the microprocessor.

A monitoring apparatus useful in detecting viability of biological cells. A substrate defines a microscopic chamber. One or more microcantilevers extend from the substrate into the chamber. A detector is operatively connected to the microcantilevers for sensing a state of deformation thereof. On each microcantilevers is deposited a layer of an environmentally sensitive hydrogel polymer having a configuration changing in accordance with presence of an environmental parameter.

Abstract:

The invention provides methods and systems useful for quickly and accurately sampling a switched capacitive load. Systems are disclosed in which the methods are implemented using an operational amplifier operably coupled to a pre-charge capacitor for storing an input charge. A sampling capacitor is also coupled to the operational amplifier and to the pre-charge capacitor for receiving and holding the input charge. Abstract:

A method for converting an analog signal to a digital signal is provided. Initially, a digital representation of a portion of an analog signal is generated. Residue of the analog signal is then sampled at a sampling instant so as to generate a residue sample. A signal having a frequency that is proportional to the voltage of the residue sample is generated, and the signal is measured to generate coarse and fine measurements of the frequency. A digital representation of the residue sample from the coarse and fine measurements is then generated.
