Medtronic, Inc. - Minneapolis MN
International Classification:

Abstract:
An implantable medical device comprising a housing, a capacitor assembly, an electronics module and an energy source, such as a battery. The capacitor assembly is disposed within the housing. The electronics module is electrically connected to the capacitor assembly and similarly disposed within the housing. The capacitor assembly comprising a case, an electrode stack and an insulative liner between the case and the electrode stack. The capacitor assembly electrode stack comprising a plurality of electrode subassemblies each having a plurality of anode plates and a plurality of cathode plates with a separation layer between anode and cathode plates. The liner also maintains alignment and immobilizes the electrode stack within the capacitor assembly. Finally, the energy source is electrically connected to the electronics module. With this configuration, an overall shape and size of the implantable medical device is optimized.

Abstract:
Flat electrolytic capacitors, particularly, for use in implantable medical devices (IMDs), and the methods of fabrication of same are disclosed. The capacitors are formed with an electrode stack assembly comprising a plurality of stacked capacitor layers each comprising an anode sub-assembly of at least one anode layer, a cathode layer and separator layers wherein the anode and cathode layers have differing dimensions that avoid electrical short circuits between peripheral edges of adjacent anode and cathode layers but maximize anode electrode surface area. The electrolytic capacitor is formed of a capacitor case defining an interior case chamber and case chamber periphery, an electrode stack assembly of a plurality of stacked capacitor layers having anode and cathode tabs disposed in the interior case chamber, an electrical connector assembly for providing electrical connection with the anode and cathode tabs through the case, a cover, and electrolyte filling the remaining space within the interior case chamber. The plurality of capacitor layers and further separator layers are stacked into the electrode stack assembly and disposed within the interior case chamber such that the adjacent anode and cathode layers are electrically isolated from one another. The anode layer peripheral edges of the anode sub-assemblies of the stacked capacitor layers extend closer to the case side wall than the cathode peripheral edges of the cathode layers of the stack of capacitor layers throughout a major portion of the case chamber periphery.

Abstract:
A capacitor is described. The capacitor includes a case chamber. An electrode stack assembly is disposed within the case chamber. The electrode stack assembly includes a layer. The layer includes an anode subassembly. The anode subassembly comprises at least one anode layer that has an anode edge disposed at a first distance from an interior wall of the case chamber. The layer also includes a capacitor layer. The capacitor layer includes a cathode edge disposed at a second distance from the wall interior. The second distance is greater than the first distance.

Abstract:
A surgical instrument stabilizes an implant as the implant is secured to native tissue at a damaged tissue site such as in an intra-articular space. The instrument has a proximal end portion, a distal end portion and an intermediate portion. The distal end portion has a template for guiding an attachment mechanism into the implant and the adjacent native tissue. The distal end portion can also have barbs to engage the implant to enhance stabilization of the implant. Several instruments can be provided in a surgical kit with different lengths and shapes of distal end portions. A surgical kit could also contain modular distal end portions of varying sizes and shapes. A surgical method utilizing the stabilizing instrument is also disclosed.

Abstract:
A surgical instrument has a main shaft underlying a slide member. The slide member is movable in a proximal-distal direction. The distal end of the slide member has an open position and a closed position. The closed position is spaced from the open position in the proximal-distal direction. There is a gap between the distal end of the slide member and the distal end of the main shaft when the instrument is in the open position. The gap is smaller when the instrument is in the closed position. An implant can be received in the gap and delivered to a damaged tissue site using the instrument. An implant protector can be used when delivering the implant with the instrument. A pivotable implant cover can be used to protect the implant instead of the slide member.

Abstract:
Surgical instruments for use in sizing tissue defects and selecting an appropriate implant for the defect include sizing templates. The sizing templates are sized and shaped to correspond to the size and shape of the implants. The sizing templates may be retractable into a tube for use in arthroscopic surgery. The retractable sizing templates are resilient to allow them to be retracted into a small diameter tube, and to expand on release from the tube to the desired size and shape. The method of using the instrument set is also described.

Abstract:
An instrument for measuring the medullary canal of a long bone in order to determine the proper size for a stem centralizer is provided. The instrument includes an elongated central portion defining opposed first and second ends and a contact portion. The contact portion extends from the first end or the second end of the elongated central portion. The contact portion has a contact area for contact with the medullary canal and defines a relief area for providing clearance between the instrument and the medullary canal.

Foundation stirs controversy by charging cancer patients $83,000 for unproven but promising experimental drug
There isnt a member of the board of JLF who wouldnt rather be able to do this without charging people, said Andrew Jacobs, who sits on the boards of the foundation and NorRD Bio, a small Cambridge bioinformatics firm that helps make the vaccines. It really was a choice of this or nothing.

Strong Calls for Change on Eve of China's National Congress
As my colleague Andrew Jacobs wrote recently, re-education through labor has evolved into a sprawling extralegal system of 350 camps where more than 100,000 people toil in prison factories and on farms for up to four years. Sentences are meted out by local public security officials, and defendants
