Abstract:

An optical communications system includes a plurality of optical fiber spans. An optical loss of one of the plurality of optical fiber spans is different from an optical loss of another one of the plurality of optical fiber spans. At least one of the plurality of optical fiber spans includes an optical loss that is greater than or equal to 35 dB and at least one of the plurality of optical fiber spans includes an optical loss that is less than 30 dB. An optical amplification system includes at least one discrete optical amplifier, at least one distributed optical amplifier, and an optical loss element. The optical amplification system has spectral gain that compensates for substantially all losses experienced by the optical signals propagating in the plurality of optical fiber spans.

Abstract:

An optical communications system initiates automatic power reduction by selecting a portion of a Raman optical pumping signal from optical signals propagating on an optical fiber span. A signal related to a magnitude of the selected portion of the Raman optical pumping signal is generated. Power of at least one of the optical data signals and the optical pumping signals propagating in the optical fiber span is reduced in response to the generated signal.

Abstract:

A curved array ultrasound transducer is described which is usable in both sector and curved linear modes. The transducer includes a central portion () of elements and lateral portions () of elements on either side of the central portion. In the sector mode the central portion of elements is operated to perform phased array scanning. In the curved linear mode both the central and lateral portions of elements are operated to perform curved linear array scanning. The transducer elements of the central portion have a finer pitch than the pitch of the transducer elements of the lateral portions. In the sector mode, the elements of the central portion are operated individually, and in the curved linear mode the transducer elements of the central portion are operated in pairs. In the sector mode, the number of transducer elements of the central portion that participate in the active aperture of the transducer may be varied according to the number of transducer elements in acoustic contact with the patient.

Abstract:

An axially elongate mixing chamber defined by a mixer housing has a cylindrical sidewall and concave inwardly open hemispherical inlet and outlet end walls which form contiguous juncture with associated ends of the sidewall. A plurality of pressurized fluent materials to be mixed enter the mixing chamber from a manifold and through a common inlet passageway which terminates at a nozzle coaxially positioned within a cylindrical portion of the mixer housing. A plurality of equiangularlly spaced discharge passageways in the nozzle which terminate at discharge orifices redirect the material toward the juncture formed by the cylindrical sidewall and the hemispherical inlet end wall. A coaxial outlet orifice opens through the outlet end wall and has a cross sectional area greater than the total cross sectional area of the discharge orifices whereby a pressure drop occurs across the nozzle resulting in acceleration of the fluent material discharged from the nozzle and generally toward a turbulent mixing zone located between the nozzle and the inlet end wall. Further mixing occurs as the material moves from the mixing zone through the cylindrical portion of the chamber to the outlet end and through the outlet orifice.

Abstract:

A matrix array probe including a transducer array and integrated circuitry coupled to the transducer elements dissipates heat generated by the array and integrated circuitry through the cover of the transducer probe. A pump in the probe connector pumps fluid through a closed loop system including inbound an outbound fluid conduits in the cable. The fluid conduits in the cable are separated by the cable electrical conductors for the probe. The heat transfer in the probe is done by a heat exchanger in the probe spaceframe or transducer stack backing block and may use a Peltier device. Additional cooling may be provided by metal to metal contact with a chiller in the ultrasound system.

Abstract:

A D ultrasound imaging system has a number of different probes for different clinical applications. Each D imaging probe has a one dimensional array transducer and one or more microbeamformers coupled to the individual elements of the array. Preferably the microbeamformers are the same, and serve as a standard component of the system. The microbeamformers combine signals from the elements of their transducers and every probe has from four to sixteen outputs of partially beamformed signals. The mainframe system has a beamformer with four to sixteen channels, which completes the beamformation process for each probe.
