Abstract:

An optical communications system includes a plurality of optical fiber spans. An optical loss of one of the plurality of optical fiber spans is different from an optical loss of another one of the plurality of optical fiber spans. At least one of the plurality of optical fiber spans includes an optical loss that is greater than or equal to 35 dB and at least one of the plurality of optical fiber spans includes an optical loss that is less than 30 dB. An optical amplification system includes at least one discrete optical amplifier, at least one distributed optical amplifier, and an optical loss element. The optical amplification system has spectral gain that compensates for substantially all losses experienced by the optical signals propagating in the plurality of optical fiber spans.

Abstract:

A curved array ultrasound transducer is described which is usable in both sector and curved linear modes. The transducer includes a central portion () of elements and lateral portions () of elements on either side of the central portion. In the sector mode the central portion of elements is operated to perform phased array scanning. In the curved linear mode both the central and lateral portions of elements are operated to perform curved linear array scanning. The transducer elements of the central portion have a finer pitch than the pitch of the transducer elements of the lateral portions. In the sector mode, the elements of the central portion are operated individually, and in the curved linear mode the transducer elements of the central portion are operated in pairs. In the sector mode, the number of transducer elements of the central portion that participate in the active aperture of the transducer may be varied according to the number of transducer elements in acoustic contact with the patient.

Abstract:

An optical supervisory channel includes a transmit path that propagates optical supervisory signals to a high span loss optical fiber span having an optical loss that is greater than 35 dB. A wavelength division multiplexer adds the optical supervisory signals to the high span loss optical fiber span. A second wavelength division multiplexer extracts the optical supervisory signals from the high span loss optical fiber span. A receive path propagates the optical supervisory signals away from the high span loss optical fiber span. The optical supervisory channel also includes a means for reducing a bit error rate of the optical supervisory channel.

A charting system is provided for use in a healthcare facility having a network. The charting system includes a microphone to receive voice inputs from a caregiver. A vital sign monitor obtains a vital sign from a patient and displays it. The system includes a communication device having a voice-to-text module that includes a processor coupled to the microphone. The processor operates a voice-to-text algorithm that converts the vital sign into text in response to the caregiver dictating the vital sign into the microphone. The processor initiates transmission of the vital sign to an EMR computer via the network after conversion of the at least one vital sign to text.

Abstract:

A biopsy device includes a body, a needle, a cutter, an analysis area, a valve, and a tissue sample holder. The cutter is movable relative to the needle and in communication with the needle for transporting tissue samples. The analysis area is disposed proximally of the cutter and in communication with the needle to receive a tissue sample cut by the cutter for analysis by a user. The valve is disposed proximally of the analysis area and configured to alternate between an open configuration and a closed configuration. The tissue sample holder is disposed proximally of the valve and fixedly attached to the body. The valve is configured to permit analysis of the sample disposed in the analysis area when the valve is in the closed configuration and to permit the tissue sample to be passed into the tissue sample holder when the valve is in the open configuration.

A biopsy marker may include three shaped portions arranged sequentially along an axis, each shaped portion having a first surface and a second surface parallel to the first surface. A first narrow portion connects a first of the three shaped portions to a second of the three shaped portions. A second narrow portion connects the second of the three shaped portions to a third of the three shaped portions. The first narrow portion is twisted about the axis such that the first surface of the first shaped portion is at a first angle to the first surface of the second shaped portion. Abstract:

A biopsy device holder includes a needle holder, a distal holder, and a proximal holder. The needle holder includes an elongated housing extending between an open proximal end and a distal end. The needle holder is adapted to releasably receive the biopsy device through the open proximal end. The elongated housing includes a coupler configured to couple the needle holder to the biopsy device. The distal holder includes an opening configured to pivotably receive the distal end of the needle holder. The proximal holder includes a longitudinal stop that engages with a portion of the needle holder to prevent the needle holder from proximal longitudinal movement. The longitudinal stop is configured to disengage the coupler of the needle holder from the biopsy device when the biopsy device is moved proximally in a longitudinal direction.
