Abstract:

An method, apparatus, and computer program product for restoring a failed system in an optical mesh network. A system includes a first light termination element (LTE) and a second LTE. A first node in the network includes an optical switching unit (OSU) coupled to the first (LTE) of the system. A second node in the network includes a second OSU coupled to the second (LTE) of the system. The first node is coupled to the second node by a path. Optical data traffic can be transmitted between the first node and the second node via the path. Upon detection of a failure of the system, the first OSU and second OSU are notified of the failure. A primary role is assigned to one of the first and second OSUs, and a secondary role is assigned to the other one of the first and second OSUs. A primary restoration plan is determined by the primary OSU. Information identifying the primary restoration plan is sent from the primary OSU for effecting the restoration path to restore the system.

The communications link has adaptive PMD controls employed along the optical link, whereby PMD phenomena detected by instruments, such as PMD compensators, are interpreted as being either attributable to perturbation of fiber characteristics at large, or by failure of PMD equipment along the link. The present invention avoids taking unnecessary control or maintenance actions upon PMD related controllers and compensators. PMD notifications from various PMD compensators are correlated to identify which portion of the link has undergone a change in polarization characteristics to further identify PMD related errors and problems.

An optical communications system includes a plurality of optical fiber spans. An optical loss of one of the plurality of optical fiber spans is different from an optical loss of another one of the plurality of optical fiber spans. At least one of the plurality of optical fiber spans includes an optical loss that is greater than or equal to 35 dB and at least one of the plurality of optical fiber spans includes an optical loss that is less than 30 dB. An optical amplification system includes at least one discrete optical amplifier, at least one distributed optical amplifier, and an optical loss element. An optical communications system initiates automatic power reduction by selecting a portion of a Raman optical pumping signal from optical signals propagating on an optical fiber span. Abstract:

A curved array ultrasound transducer is described which is usable in both sector and curved linear modes. The transducer includes a central portion () of elements and lateral portions () of elements on either side of the central portion. In the sector mode the central portion of elements is operated to perform phased array scanning. In the curved linear mode both the central and lateral portions of elements are operated to perform curved linear array scanning. The transducer elements of the central portion have a finer pitch than the pitch of the transducer elements of the lateral portions. In the sector mode, the elements of the central portion are operated individually, and in the curved linear mode the transducer elements of the central portion are operated in pairs. In the sector mode, the number of transducer elements of the central portion that participate in the active aperture of the transducer may be varied according to the number of transducer elements in acoustic contact with the patient.

Various methods, systems, and computer program products for deferring transmission of data related to collapsing a collapsible display panel are presented. The collapsible display panel may be collapsed. State data that indicates the collapsible display panel has been collapsed may be generated. A determination that no non-state change data corresponding to the collapsible display panel needs to be transferred to a server may be made. Abstract:

An optical supervisory channel includes a transmit path that propagates optical supervisory signals to a high span loss optical fiber span having an optical loss that is greater than 35 dB. A wavelength division multiplexer adds the optical supervisory signals to the high span loss optical fiber span. A second wavelength division multiplexer extracts the optical supervisory signals from the high span loss optical fiber span. A receive path propagates the optical supervisory signals away from the high span loss optical fiber span. The optical supervisory channel also includes a means for reducing a bit error rate of the optical supervisory channel.
