Abstract:

The present invention relates to spectral analysis systems and methods for determining physical and chemical properties of a sample by measuring the optical characteristics of light emitted from the sample. In one embodiment, a probe head for use with a spectrometer includes an optical blocking element for forcing the optical path between the light source and an optical pick-up optically connected to the spectrometer into the sample. The probe head also includes a reference shutter for selectively blocking light emitted from the sample from reaching the optical pick-up to facilitate calibration of the spectrometer.

Abstract:

Provided is a mobile apparatus for use in a wireless cellular-based communication system. The apparatus includes means for conducting a wireless cellular-based call (e. g. , a packet data call) by communicating with a first base station means for automatically performing the following steps in response to a completion of the wireless cellular-based call: (i) storing overhead information specifically pertaining to the first base station; (ii) selecting a second base station with which to communicate, based on a comparison of plural available base stations; (iii) determining whether the second base station is identical to the first base station; and (iv) utilizing the stored overhead information for communicating with the second base station if and only if the second base station is identical to the first base station.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for reducing power dissipation in mobile stations that are configured to provide concurrent voice and high-speed packet data communication capability in a cellular telecommunications system. A state is defined during which data directed to a mobile station (MS) is not fully receive processed by the MS. Such a reduced receive processing state may be co-extensive with a Control Hold state. A notification mechanism is presented by which a serving base station directs a mobile station to return from reduced to full receive processing in advance of transmitting data on a packet data channel. The notification may take several forms, such as a message presenting the MS MAC address and one or more other bits of predetermined data content. Return to active (full receive) status may be required to be completed within a predetermined time, such as one ACK delay, after notification.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus are provided for determining the layout of a form automatically to accommodate text in the form. Under the method and apparatus, a set of parameters define the sizing and alignment of elements of the form. Sizing and positioning instructions that are separate from the sizing and alignment parameters set the sizing and positioning of elements of the form based on the sizing and alignment parameters. The instructions determine the minimum size for the form, based in part on text in the form. The difference between the minimum size for the form and a desired size for the form is then distributed across the form to size and position the elements in the form.

Abstract:

A method, apparatus, and system are disclosed providing improved paging procedures in a wireless communication system. In one embodiment, a Power-down Registration signal is transmitted via a 1×RTT modem from an Access Terminal (AT) to an Access Network (AN) in a wireless communication system that includes both a 1×RTT modem and a 1×HRPD modem. The Power-down Registration signal conveys information to the AN indicating that a power-down process has been initiated by the AT, and thereby enables the AN to discontinue transmission of signals and messages to the AT that are not effective when the AT is in an off-state.
