Abstract:

An active effective flow-through area control system includes an upstream wall-flow perturber and a downstream wall-flow perturber situated in an inlet region of an aircraft engine. The downstream wall-flow perturber is positioned downstream from the upstream wall-flow perturber. The upstream and downstream wall-flow perturbers are configured to generate and trap at least one region of separated, vortical flow in the airflow through the inlet region. A method, for actively changing an effective flow-through area of an inlet region of an aircraft engine, includes creating at least one region of separated, vortical flow in an airflow passage defined by the inlet region. The method further includes trapping the region of separated, vortical flow in the airflow passage. The region of separated, vortical flow partially obstructs a main inlet airflow.

Abstract:

A device for reducing engine exhaust noise in an aircraft engine includes a number of oscillating jets which direct an oscillating flow into the engine exhaust. The oscillating jets are connected via channels to a turbomachinery source of high pressure gas, where the source is located upstream from the engine exhaust portion. The high pressure gas passes through the oscillating jets, which have a nozzle with a triangular shaped orifice and an exhaust pipe, and exits the oscillating jets having a oscillating flow. The oscillating flow mixes with the engine exhaust thus reducing the noise created by the engine exhaust.

Abstract:

A wind turbine blade is situated on a wind turbine and includes a side and a tip. The blade is configured to rotate about an axis upon an impact of a wind flow on the blade. An active flow modification device is disposed on the blade. The active flow modification device is configured to receive active flow instructions and to modify the wind flow proximate to the blade. The resulting wind turbine blade uses these active flow modifications to achieve reduced loads, reduced aerodynamic losses, reduced noise, enhanced energy capture, or combinations thereof.

Abstract:

An aircraft engine is provided with at least one pulse detonation device connected to an engine exhaust nozzle portion with a plurality of supersonic injectors. The flow from the pulse detonation device is passed through the supersonic injectors into the primary engine flow path. The injector flow is injected at a velocity such that the injected flow penetrates into the primary flow path. This injected flow creates a virtual obstacle for the primary flow, and their interaction creates a virtual surface or an aero-lobe, thus controlling the nozzle exit area to reduce engine noise.

Abstract:

Low-noise wind turbine blades are provided wherein metallic and/or polymeric cellular materials that are capable of bearing directional loads are used in the construction of wind turbine blade parts or entire sections. The use of such materials influences the air flow over them in such a way that the resulting boundary-layer turbulence is damped in a controlled way, thus weakening the noise scattering mechanism at the trailing edge, and the scattered acoustic waves are absorbed and attenuated by the material acting as an acoustic liner.

Abstract:

A method of fabricating an airfoil is provided. The method includes fabricating at least one airfoil including a suction side and a pressure side coupled together at a leading edge and a trailing edge, wherein the airfoil includes a plurality of first and second chord sections each extending between the trailing and leading edges, wherein at least one of the first chord sections extends outward from the pressure side of the airfoil at the trailing edge, and at least one of the second chord sections extends outward from the suction side of the airfoil at the trailing edge.
