Abstract:

Transaction cards operable as âsmart cardsâ; credit cards; debit cards; access cards; et cetera, having an self-enabling and self-disabling feature provides for authentication and proper user verification. The card receives input from a user and determines if the input is valid. If the user input is valid, the card responds by enabling a magnetic stripe thereon. The magnetic stripe is enabled for a limited time after which it is then disabled. A disabled magnetic stripe is then inoperable for activating card readers. A card which is lost or stolen cannot be used by unauthorized users as it would have a magnetic stripe in a disabled state and only an authorized user would have the ability to enable it. The card possesses a high level of compatibility with known methodology in the art and does not require additional equipment and systems to attain its high security level.

Abstract:

A shirt collar in which the material forming at least the neckband, but alternatively both the neckband and the collar, is arranged with the weave thereof on a bias so that in the event the length of the threads shrinks there is only a negligible reduction in the circumferential size of the collar, and the collar is stretchable in a direction parallel to the circumferential direction. The stitching that forms the seams attaching the collar to the neckband, and the neckband to the body of the shirt, may be applied in a pattern, e. g. , zig-zag or skip stitching, that enables the seams to stretch in the circumferential direction of the collar.

Abstract:

A shirt collar having a stretchable neckband made of a woven fabric with at least some of the threads on a bias so that in the event the length of the threads shrinks there is only a negligible reduction in the circumferential size of the collar, and the collar is circumferentially stretchable. In one form of the invention the neckband is made of a non-elastomeric material with a plurality of holes in it which elongate when a circumferential force is applied, resulting in elongation of the neckband. In another form, the threads forming the neckband are kinked so that they are resiliently yieldable in a lengthwise direction. The stitching attaching the neckband to the collar and to the shirt body may be applied in a pattern, e. g. , zig-zag or skip stitching, that enables the seams to stretch.

Abstract:

A gas adsorption material containing a desired quantity of gas is placed in a pressurized container along with a product to be dispensed, and as pressure in the container is depleted during use, stored gas is released into the container to maintain pressure in the container within a predetermined range. The material may be in contact with the product, or it may be isolated from the product, and is known as a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system, wherein adsorption of gas into the material occurs at a high pressure, and desorption of gas from the material occurs at a low pressure. Such devices are capable of storing under pressure a volume of gas 18 to 20 times the volume of the material. A preferred adsorbent gas storage material is granular activated carbon, or a carbon fiber composite molecular sieve (CFCMS). Other materials, such as zeolite, starch-based polymers, activated alumina, silica gel, and sodium bicarbonate, or mixtures thereof, may be used, although they generally are not as effective as activated carbon. The adsorbent material may be in granular, powdered, or pellet form, or a mass of the material may be formed into variously shaped cohesive bodies, such as balls, tubes, cubes or rods, or sheets or screens which may be flat or curved or folded into various shapes, such as, for example, an accordion-like fold.

Abstract:

A medical device for treatment of a stenosed body lumen, includes an open-ended cylindrical body carried on a distal end of a catheter for insertion of the device into the body lumen and placement at the stenosed site. The cylindrical body is movable between a collapsed position for insertion into the body lumen, and a radially expanded position pressed against the wall of the body lumen. In one embodiment the body sidewall is formed by a plurality of interconnected struts or elements defining openings therebetween, and at least one elongate ribbon is attached to an outer surface thereof for carrying a therapeutic agent. In another embodiment, the body is formed of interwoven elements defining a mesh-like structure, and the elements may comprise dissimilar materials, such as, e.g., copper and silver. In a further embodiment the body is formed of layers of different materials such as, e.g., copper, silver, and/or steel, laminated together. In a still further embodiment the device is designed for temporary placement of the catheter and body in a body lumen for treatment of a stenosed site, after which the catheter and body are withdrawn. In all forms the body may have an outwardly flared inlet end to reduce turbulence of fluid flowing through it, and/or a gel-like coating of a cholesterol-dissolving or blood clot dissolving agent may be placed on the device.
