Abstract:

A pair of diffraction gratings are disposed between a fiber and a waveguide carried by a substrate. The gratings each have a common spatial frequency component that couples light between the fiber and the waveguide. Light from the gratings establish first and second components of an electromagnetic field that extend into the substrate. The gratings are constructed and positioned to cause the first and second components to be of substantially equal amplitude and opposite phase thereby inhibiting a coupling of light into the substrate.

Abstract:

A high optical quality corner is produced on a cleaved crystal which may include a stripe or surface optical waveguide by making a fracture initiation mark along only a portion of the surface intercept of the desired cleavage plane with a first of two major surfaces of the crystal and then tensioning the first major surface of the crystal to fracture the crystal along the desired cleavage plane beginning at the fracture initiation mark. This produces a high optical quality corner along a portion of the intersection of the newly cleaved surface with the major surface of the crystal. This high optical quality corner is located where no fracture initiation mark was made and enables the crystal to be used in as-cleaved form for end-fire coupling between its waveguide and an external waveguide such as an optical fiber.

Abstract:

A mold insert adapted to be inserted as a base plate in a forming apparatus for molding precast concrete modules, for the purpose of forming a sloped rabbet in the wall sills of the concrete module. The insert is shaped such that when inserted in one orientation it produces an outside edge rabbet, and when inserted in an inverted orientation produces an inside edge rabbet. It comprises an extruded-aluminum hollow main beam having a top flange, a bottom flange, side walls, and one or more supporting webs, and has a section profile which is substantially in the shape of a flattened Z-section. The beam's width dimension is chosen for close conforming fit between the inner and outer form sections. Each side wall has two C-channels having a circular curvature and adapted to receive and support resilient tubing sealing members. The width of the insert can be expanded by expansion beams having circular boss rails adapted to slide into the C-channels of the main beam.

Abstract:

Display panels having at least one suspended fibrous cathode containing an electron field emitter are disclosed. The fibrous cathode is supported by a substrate (10) containing two sets of parallel rows of crests and valleys. The first set of parallel crests (11) and valleys (12) provide the valleys along which the fibrous cathode is aligned. The second set of parallel crests (13) and valleys (14) is perpendicular to the first set. The valleys (14) provide the means for suspending the fibrous cathode. The display panels can be produced in large sizes while still maintaining high quality and efficiency.

Abstract:

First and second diffraction gratings have a common fundamental spatial frequency. A coupling assembly is formed by connecting the gratings together with bars of the first grating at an angle of approximately 10. sup. -3 radians to bars of the second grating. The coupling assembly is mounted upon a waveguide carried by a substrate. A fiber is moved to a multiplicity of locations on the coupling assembly while light is transmitted through the waveguide. The fiber is fixedly connected to the coupling assembly at a location where there is a maximum amount of the light coupled from the waveguide to the fiber, whereby the fiber and the substrate form a sandwich that includes the coupling assembly and the waveguide. An etching process is used to remove parts of the coupling assembly that are not within the sandwich.

A solar array positioning system includes first light sensor means facing the same direction as the solar array and second light sensor means facing the opposite direction. A third sensor, this one responsive to gravity, is employed to indicate the direction about a diurnal slew axis that the array is tilted. These sensors are employed to determine the initial array slewing direction to insure that during slewing and subsequent tracking, the array never is rotated through more than a given angle, less than 360. degree. , between two fixed limits. This permits connection to the array by hard wiring rather than slip rings. The system includes also fourth sensor means for providing fine tracking signals which assume control of the array position during tracking. A vane structure reduces the sensitivity of various of the sensors to obscuration by foreign particles. A low cost uncorrected lens may be used with the fourth.
