Abstract:
A soft error correction algebraic decoder and an associated method use erasure reliability numbers to derive error locations and values. More specifically, symbol reliability numbers from a maximum likelihood (ML) decoder as well as a parity check success/failure from inner modulation code symbols are combined by a Reed-Solomon decoder in an iterative manner, such that the ratio of erasures to errors is maximized. The soft error correction (ECC) algebraic decoder and associated method decode Reed Solomon codes using a binary code and detector side information. The Reed Solomon codes are optimally suited for use on erasure channels. A threshold adjustment algorithm qualifies candidate erasures based on a detector error filter output as well as modulation code constraint success/failure information, in particular parity check or failure as current modulation codes in disk drive applications use parity checks. This algorithm creates fixed erasure inputs to the Reed Solomon decoder. A complementary soft decoding algorithm of the present invention teaches the use of a key equation solver algorithm that calculates error patterns obtained as a solution to a weighted rational interpolation problem with the weights given by the detector side information.
An invert emulsion suitable for drilling subterranean wells, in particular oil and gas wells is disclosed which has negative alkalinity and includes an oleaginous phase, and a non-oleaginous phase and an emulsifying agent which stabilizes the invert emulsion under conditions of negative alkalinity. The practice of the present invention permits the formulation of drilling fluids which are absent an alkaline reserve and yet are suitable for drilling oil and gas wells.

Abstract:
A method of treating silicate-based wellbore fluids that includes flocculating at least a portion of contaminants contained in a silicate-based wellbore fluid out of the fluid phase; and separating the flocculated contaminants from the fluid phase. Methods of recycling silicate-based fluids, methods of disposing used silicate-based fluid, and methods of disposing of wellbore fluid waste are also disclosed.

Abstract:
A method of removing clay compounded on drilling equipment in a well that includes contacting the drilling equipment with a treatment fluid comprising an oxidizing agent. Methods disclosed also relate to drilling a wellbore though a clay-containing formation that includes drilling through the formation with a water-containing drilling fluid; reducing applied weight-on-bit when bit balling detected; emplacing a treatment fluid comprising an oxidizing agent to disrupt clay compounded on drilling equipment; and increasing weight-on-bit to continue drilling through the formation

Abstract:
A method of treating a formation that includes injecting gelling components curable by a moisture cure into a selected region of the formation; and controlling the onset of curing of the gelling components by contacting the gelling components with a drying agent is disclosed.
A slurry for treating a wellbore that includes a base fluid; at least one fibrous structure; and a plurality of calcium silicate particles is disclosed. Methods of reducing loss of wellbore fluid in a wellbore to a formation using an LCM pill having calcium silicate particles therein is also disclosed.

Abstract:
In a method of gravel packing a wellbore in a subterranean formation, the wellbore comprising a cased section and an uncased section, the method may include pumping into the wellbore a gravel pack composition comprising gravel and a carrier fluid comprising an invert emulsion fluid, where the invert emulsion fluid may comprise: an oleaginous external phase; a non-oleaginous internal phase, wherein a ratio of the oleaginous external phase and non-oleaginous internal phase is less than 50:50 and an emulsifier stabilizing the oleaginous external phase and the non-oleaginous internal phase.
The present invention relates to an oil-based drilling fluid, a continuous phase for an oil-based drilling fluid, and additives for an oil-based drilling fluid. The drilling fluid, the continuous phase of the drilling fluid, and the additives for the oil-based drilling fluid are characterized by non-fluorescence (defined as a fluorescence intensity of 800 or less) when exposed to ultraviolet light. The continuous phase of the drilling fluid is composed of synthetic hydrocarbons selected from the group consisting of oligomers synthesized from one or more alphaolefins containing a C. sub. 2 to C. sub. 14 chain length, wherein the oligomers have an average molecular weight of from 120 to 100, and additives. The additives of the continuous phase include surfactants, wetting agents and/or emulsifiers.
