Abstract:

A material preferably in crystal form having a low atomic number such as beryllium (Z=4) provides for the focusing of x-rays in a continuously variable manner. The material is provided with plural spaced curvilinear, optically matched slots and/or recesses through which an x-ray beam is directed. The focal length of the material may be decreased or increased by increasing or decreasing, respectively, the number of slots (or recesses) through which the x-ray beam is directed, while fine tuning of the focal length is accomplished by rotation of the material so as to change the path length of the x-ray beam through the aligned cylindrical slots. X-ray analysis of a fixed point in a solid material may be performed by scanning the energy of the x-ray beam while rotating the material to maintain the beam's focal point at a fixed point in the specimen undergoing analysis.

Abstract:

Active optics apparatus and method for aligning active optics are provided for a high-resolution, active optic fluorescence analyzer combining a large acceptance solid angle with wide energy tunability. A plurality of rows of correctors selectively controlled to bend an elongated strip of single crystal material like Si () into substantially any precisely defined shape. A pair of pushers engages opposite ends of the silicon crystal strip exert only a force along the long axis of the crystal strip, and does not induce additional bending moments which would result in a torsion of the crystal.

Systems and methods for the batch production of large numbers of highly uniform multichannel-plate photomultiplier tubes (MCP-PMTs) for large-scale applications are provided. The systems and methods employ dual, nested low-vacuum (LV) and UHV processing in a rapid-cycling, small-footprint, scalable, batch-production facility that is capable of fabricating many MCP-PMTs simultaneously.
