  • Tobacco Harvester Having A Hydraulic Control System For Automatically And Continuously Controlling The Speed Of A Leaf Defoliator Assembly In Relation To The Harvester Ground Speed

    view source
  • US Patent:
    40731243, Feb 14, 1978
  • Filed:
    Oct 18, 1976
  • Appl. No.:
    5/733095
  • Inventors:
Bertram L. Jordan - Lewiston NC
John D. Mitchell - Lewiston NC
  • Assignee:
Harrington Manufacturing Company - Lewiston NC
  • International Classification:
    A01D 4516
  • US Classification:
    56 1
  • Abstract:
A tobacco harvester having a hydraulic control system for automatically and continuously controlling and maintaining the speed of a leaf defoliator assembly relative to and in proportion to the ground speed of the tobacco harvester. The hydraulic control system is adapted to continuously control the horizontal rearward speed component of the defoliating elements of a leaf defoliator assembly such that the defoliating elements move rearwardly during leaf defoliation at approximately the same speed the harvester is moving forward. To provide for continuous speed control of the defoliator assembly, the hydraulic speed control system is operative to continuously effectively sense or monitor harvester ground speed and to continuously drive the defoliator assembly in proportion to the effectively sensed or monitored ground speed. In addition, the output of said hydraulic control system for controlling the speed of the defoliator assembly can be varied independently of harvester ground speed in order to synchronize or adjust the horizontal rearward speed component of the defoliating elements associated with said defoliator assembly to equal or nearly equal the forward ground speed of the harvester. Thus, the speed of the defoliator assembly is not only controlled and driven in proportion to the harvester ground speed, but the horizontal rearward speed component of the defoliating elements are driven at a speed approximately equal to the harvester ground speed.

  • Method And Apparatus For Cleaning Chicken Manure From Chicken Houses

    view source
  • US Patent:
    47114037, Dec 8, 1987
  • Filed:
    Mar 10, 1986
  • Appl. No.:
    6/838156
  • Inventors:
Charles E. Gregory - Tarboro NC
Bertram L. Jordan - Lewiston NC
  • International Classification:
    B02C 2102
  • US Classification:
    2411012
  • Abstract:
The present invention relates to a chicken manure handling machine and system. The chicken manure handling machine is designed to be maneuvered inside a chicken house and is particularly used to automatically clean chicken manure from the chicken house between flocks. As the chicken manure machine is moved through the chicken house, a blade scrapes the caked-like chicken manure and associated litter up from the floor and directs the combined caked material (manure, litter, etc. ) upwardly onto an elevator/shaker assembly. As the caked material is conveyed upwardly on the elevator/shaker assembly, the caked manure and associated litter is shaken, causing portions of the associated litter to be separated and to fall through the elevator/shaker assembly onto the chicken house floor where it can be reused by the next flock. The remaining caked material and especially the chicken manure, is conveyed upwardly by the elevator/shaker assembly where it is dumped into a load bed that is mounted on the same frame structure supporting the blade and elevator shaker assembly. The dump bed is movable on frame structure of the machine from a horizontal loading position to a tilted unloading position.

  • Tobacco Harvester Defoliator Head Having A Positive Stalk Gripping Assembly

    view source
  • US Patent:
    40031926, Jan 18, 1977
  • Filed:
    May 20, 1975
  • Appl. No.:
    5/579194
  • Inventors:
Bertram Lee Jordan - Lewiston NC
John Davis Mitchell - Lewiston NC
  • Assignee:
Harrington Manufacturing Company - Lewiston NC
  • International Classification:
    A01D 4516
  • US Classification:
    56 275
  • Abstract:
The present invention relates to a defoliator head for a tobacco harvester in which the defoliator head is provided with a positive stalk gripping assembly for engaging and substantially encompassing respective tobacco stalks passing through the defoliator head during harvesting. The positive stalk gripping assembly comprises a pair of hydraulically driven belts disposed in side-by-side relationship so as to define a stalk passing area therebetween, and wherein at least one said belts includes a continuous series of outwardly projecting lugs disposed on the outside thereof. As the belts are driven, stalks entering therebetween are engaged and substantially encompass by the belts and successive lugs. Consequently, the stalks are stabilized and generally held in a firm upright position while the leaves are being defoliated therefrom by a defoliator mechanism associated with said defoliator head. There is also provided a hydraulic speed control system that continuously effectively senses or monitors the ground speed of the harvester and drives the stalk gripping belts such that the horizontal rearward speed of the lugs is generally equal and opposite the harvester ground speed.
  • Speed Control Unit For Driving The Pick-Up Reel Of A Peanut Combine

    view source
  • US Patent:
    41423488, Mar 6, 1979
  • Filed:
    Jun 6, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/803522
  • Inventors:
Bertram L. Jordan - Lewiston NC
John D. Mitchell - Lewiston NC
  • Assignee:
Harrington Manufacturing Company - Lewiston NC
  • International Classification:
    A01D 8900
  • US Classification:
    56 102
  • Abstract:
The present invention relates to a speed control unit associated with a peanut combine for driving and controlling the peripheral speed of a forwardly disposed crop engaging pick-up reel rotatively mounted transversely about the front of the peanut combine. The speed control unit basically includes a dual input drive system including a first drive operatively connected to at least one ground engaging wheel of the combine for providing an input drive corresponding to the ground speed of the peanut combine. A second generally constant input drive is provided from a power take-off source associated with the peanut combine. These two drives simultaneously drive a centrifugal clutch which includes an output drive member that is driven at a speed corresponding to the faster of the two input drives. In controlling the peripheral speed of the pick-up reel, the clutch assembly and speed control unit is so designed that the pick-up reel is driven from the output drive member of the clutch assembly such that the peripheral speed of the pick-up reel is generally equal the ground speed of the peanut combine as long as the ground speed of the combine is at least equal to or greater than a selected speed. Where the speed of the peanut combine falls below said selected speed, then the second generally constant input speed from the power take-off source is operative to drive the output drive member of the clutch assembly and consequently the peripheral speed of the pick-up reel is driven at a relatively constant speed in this case.
