In 1947 a retired Marine Corps Major, Bill Hendricks, collected 5,000 toys for needy kids in the Los Angeles area. The next year the USMC adopted his program and the United States Marine Corps Reserve has been in charge of the Toys for Tots program ever sinceand turned it into a nation wide program
Toys for Tots started in 1947 when Maj. Bill Hendricks' wife, Diane, asked him to take a few handmade dolls to an organization that would give them to needy children. There were no such organizations, so he started his own.
