An improved fishing rod holder uses a spring loaded tubular receptacle within which the rod is placed. A fixed locking element extends within the tubular receptacle and provides a fulcrum on which the rod pivots such that force applied to the rod tip increases the gripping force applied to the rod. Removal and insertion of the rod is accomplished by pivoting the tubular receptacle relative to the locking element.

Abstract:
A spring loaded bait holder includes two detachable J-shaped fish hooks clamped together by a biasing device. After attachment of the apparatus to a fishing line, a portion of bait may be inserted and retained between the hooks. The biasing device presses the hooks together and securely holds the bait in position during casting or extended immersion in water.

Abstract:
A fishing rod holder with automatic hook setter embodies a supporting frame having a rod holder operatively connected thereto and adapted for vertical pivotal movement. One end of a trigger rod is pivotally connected to the supporting frame with the other end of the trigger rod extending forwardly beneath a fishing rod supported by the rod holder. A fishing rod support member is carried by the forward end of the trigger rod and is movable therewith selectively to a lower inoperative position and to an upper operative, hook setting position. One end of a jerk rod is pivotally connected to the supporting frame. The other end of the jerk rod extends forwardly and is urged upwardly toward the trigger rod by a resilient member. A releasable connector assembly operatively connects the jerk rod to the trigger rod and is operable to hold the trigger rod in the inoperative position until the fishing rod support member carried thereby is moved downwardly and is then operable to release the jerk rod from the trigger rod so that it is urged upwardly to move the trigger rod and the fishing rod to the hook setting position.
A fish detector for use with a rod and reel detects the movement of the line by deflection of a flexible member which engages the line near the reel and holds it outwardly from the rod. The flexible member is more flexible than the rod tip and may be coated with visibility enhancing material such as plastic.
Billy Simmons hoped his early arrival would help him beat the crowds, but it didn't. "I was a little bit surprised, I call myself getting up early so I could avoid the lines but unfortunately several people had that same idea I'm glad to see as many people feeling that way," Simmons said.

Few homeowners' earthquake damage covered by insurance
Despite the relative infrequency of earthquakes in the area, insurance agent Billy Simmons said he expects to see an influx of Washington-region residents requesting quake insurance over the next couple months.
