Abstract:
Apparatus for applying a liquid additive to a continuous, multifilament tow includes a nonrotating tubular body and a nonmetallic element associated with the wall of the tubular body for contacting the multifilament tow as it is moved across the surface of the nonmetallic element. The nonmetallic element has an arcuate, external surface that is provided with a plurality of spaced openings formed in the nonmetallic element and which are in communication with an enclosure within the tubular body. Liquid additive is supplied to the enclosure and is transferred to the arcuate, external surface via the plurality of spaced openings for application to the multifilament tow as it contacts the arcuate, external surface of the nonmetallic element.
Method Of And Apparatus For Reclaiming Cigarettes From Cigarette Packages
A method and apparatus for opening cigarette packs involving minimal contact with the cigarettes in the pack and little likelihood of damage or degradation of the tobacco contained in the cigarettes. The invention includes conveying packs to a first location where they are received, moving the packs to a second location where they are pressurized and expanded, moving the pressurized expanded packs to a third location where one end is cut off, moving the packs to a fourth location where impulse is applied to the pack as a whole, resulting in the transfer of the pack to a fifth location, where the motion of the pack itself is stopped, but the inertia of the cigarettes themselves is conserved sufficiently that they are transferred to a conveyance for further processing. The empty packs are disposed of at a sixth location. The method and apparatus is intermittent, involving regular starting and stopping motions.

Abstract:
An adhesive spray delivery apparatus and a method of applying a predetermined quantity of anchoring adhesive in a predetermined spray pattern to an advancing web of cigarette paper are disclosed. The apparatus includes a pressurized spray system under control of a programmable controller for precisely and uniformly applying the adhesive in an atomized spray to the advancing cigarette paper, thereby eliminating the need to increase the density of the tobacco rod at discrete intervals of the rod to compensate for a significant volume of loose ends. The apparatus is portable and may be retrofitted to existing cigarette makers.

Abstract:
An apparatus and method for the tensionless unwinding of a gossamer web of material from a bobbin uses a servo control system connected between the servomotors of a web handling apparatus and a bobbin unwinder for controlling the unwinding speed of the bobbin unwinder in relation to the take-up speed of the web handling apparatus. A pulsed infrared sensor is used to sense the web position in a loop between the unwinder and the web handling apparatus and supply a feedback signal to the servo control system for maintaining the web in a substantially untensioned state. A flow of air is impinged upon the web adjacent the sensor to prevent unwanted web movement due to ambient air currents and other transitory forces on the web.

Abstract:
A beauty coil that is in the form of a rod which is comprised of a mass of elongated fibers which run the length of the rod. The fibers are held in a compressed state by an outer sheathing having a pair of longitudinal slits at one end of the rod to form a tab to permit easy removal of the sheath which allows the fiber mass to expand or blossom prior to use.

Abstract:
Cigarette filter rods having individual pellets positioned at predetermined intervals therein are prepared by cutting a strand of plasticized material into pellets which are then inserted into a web of filter tow. A wheel having a series of grooves is rotated within a rim-like housing, and introduction of a plasticized flavor-containing strand into each groove results in a cutting of the strand into pellets of the desired size. Each pellet is positioned within the moving web of tow. The web filter material and the pellets positioned within the web are introduced into a rod-making unit wherein the rod is formed. The rate of feed of the strand, the rate of feed of the filter tow, the rate of rotation of the grooved wheel and the rate of pellet formation are controlled relative to one another such that pellets of well controlled size are positioned at predetermined intervals along the rod. Cigarette filter elements having well controlled amounts of flavorant contained therein can be made from the rods.
