Abstract:

A wind turbine includes a quartet of pivot shafts in paired parallel relationship and transversely mounted on a central drive shaft, each pivot shaft supporting a pair of wings at opposed ends thereof, the wings offset by 90. Each pivot shaft rotates cyclically through 90 to move each wing from a wind-engaging orientation (drive position) in which the wing presents a flat surface approximately transverse to the incident wind, to a minimum drag position (glide position). The wings of each pair of pivot shafts open into the drive position at the same time and rotational angle of the turbine. A backstop at the site of each drive position transfers force from each wing to the central drive shaft.

Abstract:

In addition, the two wings of each pair on a shaft are disposed in planes that are offset by approximately 90 about their pivot shaft, so that one is in the drive position while the other is in the glide position. The wings of each pair of pivot shafts have wings at the ends thereof that open into the drive position at the same time and rotational angle of the turbine. A backstop at the site of each drive position supports the wind load and transfers its force to the central drive shaft.

Abstract:

A PAVA (parallel and vertical axis) turbine includes a plurality of wing Assemblies having vertical pivot shafts extending between two vertically spaced end assemblies that are joined to a central driveshaft assembly. The wing assemblies are rotatable about their respective pivot axes from a drive position in which they extend radially outwardly from the central axis and transverse to incident fluid flow to maximally capture fluid flow and rotate the turbine, to a glide position in which the wings extend tangentially to the direction of rotation and parallel to incident fluid flow to minimize drag. The wings may have articulating flaps rotating outwardly from the wing assembly in the drive quadrant to capture more of the passing fluid flow.

Abstract:

A system includes a water turbine, a plurality of positioning winches coupled to the water turbine and a plurality of positioning cables. An individual positioning cable extends between a fixed point at a first end and the water turbine at a second end and is coupled to a corresponding positioning winch that is configured to extend and retract the individual positioning cable between the fixed point and the water turbine. A plurality of sensors is configured to sense water conditions around the water turbine. A position control system is connected to the plurality of positioning winches and connected to the plurality of sensors. The position control system is configured to position the water turbine using the plurality of positioning winches according to the water conditions sensed by the plurality of sensors.
