Abstract:A bi-directional metal-to-metal seal (10) comprising a ring with a pair of oppositely acting sealing elements (20 or 22) integral with the outer periphery of the ring. In one embodiment, two pairs of such sealing elements (20 and 22) are located on each end of the ring (as viewed in cross section) and are of a thickness to be resilient (springy) and deflectable when inserted in an interference fit relationship into a cylindrical wall or bore to be sealed. The first sealing element (24) has a curved outer surface (26) and with an opening (30) facing the main flow path of pressure fluid. The curved outer surface rolls inward against the cylindrical wall (42) while being inserted into the cylinder, partially closing the opening (30) but still allowing the pressure fluid to enter and urge the curved surface against the cylindrical wall. The second sealing element (32) also has a curved outer surface (36) and is of a thickness to be flexible and springy and likewise deflectable (rollable) into the cylindrical surface (26) in an interference fit relationship. The second sealing element (32) has a wall (34) which is open towards a second fluid under pressure so that the seal elements are operable in two directions.

Abstract:A wellhead housing has features to increase the load carrying capabilities. The wellhead housing has a inclined load shoulder. A lower casing hanger which supports the outer string of casing is supported on the load shoulder. A landing profile locates between the load shoulder and the casing hanger. The landing ring has a cylindrical portion both above and below the load shoulder. These cylindrical portions restrain the material of the wellhead housing from yielding downward and inward. Also, a support ring encircles the wellhead housing on the exterior radially outward from the load shoulder. The support ring is fitted to the wellhead housing in an interference fit to provide a preload compressive force. Additional casing hangers for intermediate and inner strings are supported on the lower casing hanger.

Abstract:Disclosed is a production tree (10) with a top block (mandrel) (12) of the tree provided with a cone-shaped male connector member (14) which also functions as a manifold, and called a cone seal manifold, by having a plurality of shuttle valves (66) which, in the production mode connect umbilical hydraulic control lines (44) to valve actuator control lines (42). In the workover mode, a running tool (132) having a mating bell-shaped female connector member (134) engages the cone seal manifold (14) and moves the shuttle valves (66) to disconnect the umbilical control lines (44) from the valve actuator control lines (42) and to open the valve actuator control lines (42) to rig hydraulic control lines in the running tool (132) through the mating cone seal surfaces (134,56). Normally closed passageways (112) in the cone (56) of the cone seal manifold (14) are opened by fluid pressure from the rig control lines.

Abstract:The collet-type connector (10) comprising an upper body member (20) having a plurality of collet segments (52), a cam ring (64) movable relative to the upper body member (20) to move said collet segments (52) into a detachable connection of the connector to a subsea wellhead (14, 14a). The cam ring (64) and collet segments (52) have sets of camming surfaces whereby a first set (86, 92) cooperate to pivot the collet segments (52) initially toward the wellhead (14, 14a) and whereby a second set (96, 104) serves to urge the collet segments (52) further to clamp the connector (10) to the subsea wellhead (14, 14a). When the second set (96, 104) of camming surfaces function, the first set (86, 92) no longer function to rotate the collet segments, thus reducing the power requirement for urging the collet segments (52) into clamping engagement to only one set at a time, even though both sets together serve to aid in holding the collet segments in clamping engagement with the wellhead after final engagement. The connector is further characterized by the fact that, first, one set (86, 92) of camming surfaces serves to hold the collet segments (52) in a conical orientation to facilitate positioning the connector (10) over the wellhead (14, 14a) and, second, together with the complementary ledges (92, 94) to form a load path (arrow 122) between the collet segments (52) and the upper body member so that any load on the connector (10) as it is being placed in the wellhead (14, 14a) will be transferred to the upper body member. Further, the means for actuating the cam ring (64) are hydraulic cylinders (66) which are mounted for easy removal and replacement, if necessary.
