Abstract:
Pellet material and a process for producing such pellet material, which pellet material is suitable for use as an improved fuel that is particularly suitable for use in automatic stoker furnaces and kilns, and for home heating. The pellets are formed of a mixture of particulate peat and coal fines, with the peat serving both as a binder to retain the shape of the pellets and as a fuel material. The process of forming the pellets consists of air drying and then milling or grinding peat, mixing this particulate matter with coal fines or ground sludge material, and then pelletizing the resulting mixture in a pelletizer such as a pellet mill, with the pellets then air-dried to reduce the moisture content to a range of about 10% to 15% by weight.
A simple and efficient process is provided for the preparation of fuel pellets comprised of, in whole or in part, a modified cellulosic material. By contacting a cellulosic material with certain enzymes, such as cellulase, the cellulose structure is modified so that the material flows more easily and therefore less energy need be expended in formation of the pellets. Hence, higher production is obtained by increased input and output to and from the pellet mill. Moreover, the pelletizing die itself is subjected to less abrasion and hence has a longer life.

Abstract:
An improved spectrophotometer having a light source, a scanning type monochromator that provides light beams of different wavelengths over a light spectrum being scanned, and an object photometer for measuring the intensity of reflected light from an object being tested and generating an electrical signal proportional to the intensity of the light measured and connected to means for recording the signal as a function of wavelength measured, the improvement used therewith comprising: (a) a beam splitter that divides the beam exiting from the monochromator into first and second light beams, whereby the first beam is incident upon the object; (b) a reference photometer that measures the flux of the second light beam and generates an output electrical signal proportional to the intensity of the light measured; and (c) a light source control, connecting the reference photometer and the light source, which receives the electrical signal from the reference photometer and generates a feedback electrical signal to adjust the intensity of the light source to maintain the reference photometer output electrical signal level constant across the light spectrum that is being scanned. The spectrophotometer is useful for determining standard color values for coatings on substrates or for any colored surface.
