  • Electronically Actuated Display Array For Displaying Arithmetic Operation Symbols

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20030162155, Aug 28, 2003
  • Filed:
    Feb 26, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/083457
  • Inventors:
Charles Resor - Wilson WY, US
Tommy Martin - Lubbock TX, US
  • International Classification:
    G09B005/00
  • US Classification:
    434/201000
  • Abstract:
An improved multi-segment, electronically-actuated display array that displays (a) a multiplication symbol configured approximately like “×”, and, centered in the same location, (b) one or more of an addition symbol, a subtraction symbol, and a division symbol configured approximately like “+”, “-”, and “÷”, respectively. A novel central segment or central segment group of the array displays a central portion of the multiplication symbol and of the other displayable arithmetic operation symbols—essentially the entire intersection of (a) the multiplication symbol and (b) a horizontal bar constituting the entire subtraction symbol, the horizontal portion of the addition symbol, and/or the vertically-centered portion of the division symbol. A novel feature of the central segment or central segment group is that its maximum horizontal dimension significantly exceeds the height of the just-mentioned horizontal bar and the thickness of the arms of any displayable addition symbol.
  • Electronic Learning Aid For Teaching Arithmetic Skills

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20030180699, Sep 25, 2003
  • Filed:
    Feb 26, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/083455
  • Inventors:
Charles Resor - Wilson WY, US
  • International Classification:
    G09B007/00
  • US Classification:
    434/322000
  • Abstract:
A learning aid for teaching arithmetic skills, that functions without an external source of electricity and weighs less than one kilogram, poses sets of problems to a user. The device has a question-probability-setting selector which allows the user to select—for practicing or testing—from among different groups of problems in which different problems have different probabilities of being posed. The device can pose sets of recently-missed questions by means of a missed-questions memory that stores a limited number of questions that a user—during one or more sets of questions—has most recently either answered incorrectly or failed to answer within a per-question time limit. The device generates an evaluative question-set score based on how well the user has answered a set of questions posed by it and stores and displays, one at a time, the scores for a limited number of the most recent question sets. Furthermore, the device continues to store the most recent scores and most recently missed questions even when its main power is turned off.
  • Electronic Learning Aid For Teaching Arithmetic Skills

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20070275357, Nov 29, 2007
  • Filed:
    Aug 7, 2007
  • Appl. No.:
    11/834854
  • Inventors:
Charles Resor - Wilson WY, US
  • International Classification:
    G09B 7/02
  • US Classification:
    434201000
  • Abstract:
An electronic learning aid for teaching arithmetic skills includes a question engine for selecting and communicating to a user a plurality of questions, one question at a time. The aid has a manually operable input device for use by the user to respond to the questions, and the question engine has at least one mode in which the engine ceases accepting a response to a question upon the entry of an incorrect alphanumeric character. The question engine, in response to the entry of an incorrect alphanumeric character, displays a subsequent question and waits for a predetermined period of time after display of the subsequent question before accepting a response to the subsequent question.
  • Non-Right Justification Display System And Method For Displaying Arithmetic Equations

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20090155752, Jun 18, 2009
  • Filed:
    Dec 22, 2004
  • Appl. No.:
    11/024156
  • Inventors:
Charles Pillsbury Resor - Wilson WY, US
  • International Classification:
    G09B 5/00
    G06F 3/00
    G09B 19/00
  • US Classification:
    434201, 708170
  • Abstract:
Display system and method for visually displaying arithmetic equations in a non-right justified manner. A first set of one or more arrays displays a first operand, a second set displays a second operand, and a third set displays a numeral. The numeral typically represents an answer to the equation. The display of at least one of the first operand, the second operand, or the numeral can be non-right justified. When non-right justification occurs, the array set corresponding to the non-right justified operand or numeral includes at least one more array than is required to display the operand or numeral, and at least one array to the right of that operand or numeral is left inactive.
