Abstract:
A method and apparatus for controlling bit slips in a high-speed, two-way, communications channel. More particularly, the entire communications system, comprising, inter alia, a receiver, a transmitter and the physical communications channel is operated as a feedback loop. That is, the detection of bit slips is performed continuously in the receiver and a bit slip signal is generated that indicates the number of bit slips and the direction, i. e. , forward or backward, of the bit slip. Thus, the bit slip signal is communicated to the transmitter and certain actions are performed to introduce bit adjustments in the bit stream to eliminate the effects of any future bit slips. The bit slip signal contains an indication of the number of bit slips which have occurred, the time between bit slips, and the direction of the slip. As a function of this information from the bit slip signal, bit adjustments are made in the communications stream to correct for the bit slips and mitigate any effect in future transmission. For example, such bit adjustments include adding bits to particular data words in the bit stream or repositioning pointers used to traverse the data stream.
Melanocortin-3 Receptor Deficient Cells, Non-Human Trangenic Animals And Methods Of Selecting Compounds Which Regulate Body Weight
Cells and non-human transgenic animals have been engineered to be deficient in the gene encoding the melcanocortin-3 receptor protein (MC-3R). MC-3R deficient transgenic animals have increased fatmass and reduced lean body mass, showing that the MC-3R protein is involved in the regulation of body fat and muscle mass. These MC-3R deficient transgenic animals can be used to select for and test potential modulators of MC-3R. This data allows for methods of screening for MC-3R modulators which effect body weight and associated methods of treating various disorders associated with inappropriate regulation of body weight. The disclosure also relates to a MC-3R/MC-4R double knockout mouse which can be used to select for and test potential modulators (e. g. , agonists or antagonists) of MC-3R and/or MC-4R. It is shown that MC-3R serves a non-redundant role, when compared to MC-4R, in the regulation of energy homeostasis.

Abstract:
Cells and non-human transgenic animals have been engineered to be deficient in the gene encoding agouti-related protein (AgRP). AgRP deficient transgenic animals have a reduced day time respiratory quotient (RQ), indicating that AgRP is involved in the regulation of energy metabolism, resulting in the reduced usage of fat as an energy source. These AgRP deficient transgenic animals can be used to select for and test potential modulators of AgRP. This data allows for methods of screening for AgRP modulators which regulate energy metabolism and caloric utilization. The disclosure also relates to a NPY/AgRP double knockout mouse which can be used to select for and test potential modulators (e.g., agonists or antagonists) of AgRP and/or NPY.

Abstract:
A transgenic mouse has been prepared that expresses a human interluekin-1. beta. transgene. Expression of the transgene is mediated by a mouse metallothionein promoter. As a result of the expression of this transgene, the mouse has inflammation of its kidney and liver. The claimed animals are useful as screening tools for agents that are potentially useful for treating inflammation.
