A balloon catheter having a balloon with a reduced slippage lubricious coating, and a method of performing a medical procedure such as a balloon dilatation procedure in a patient's blood vessel. The second coating (i. e. , the balloon coating) is lubricious to facilitate movement of the catheter in the patient's body lumen, yet has sufficiently low lubricity such that the slippage of the inflated balloon from a desired site within the blood vessel is reduced compared to a balloon coated with the first lubricious coating.

Abstract:

An intraluminal catheter comprising an elongated shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, at least one lumen, and a distal tip having an internal taper. The distal tip has an inner surface tapering distally to an inner diameter smaller than an inner diameter of the shaft proximal to the tapered distal tip. In one embodiment, the distal tip includes an outer surface tapering distally to an outer diameter smaller than an outer diameter of the shaft proximal to the tapered distal tip. In a presently preferred embodiment, the distal tip defines at least in part a guidewire receiving lumen. A method of making a catheter shaft section with an internal taper in accordance with the invention generally includes placing at least a section of a polymeric tube having a first end, a second end and a lumen therein on a section of a mandrel having a straight cylindrical surface with a substantially constant outer diameter, so that a gap exists between an inner surface of the polymeric tube and an outer surface of the mandrel. The polymeric tube on the mandrel is placed within a mold having a tapered end. The polymeric tube is heated and the first end of the polymeric tube is placed in contact with the tapered end of the mold, so that an internal taper is formed in the first end of the polymeric tube.

An elongated intracorporeal device, more specifically, a balloon catheter having an elongate shaft with a distal section. The distal section of the shaft has a distal inner tubular member with an inflatable balloon disposed about the distal inner tubular member. A radiopaque marker formed at least in part of a polymer is disposed on the distal inner tubular member. The flexible radiopaque marker can be formed either by doping a desired portion of the distal inner tubular member with an appropriate radiopaque material, or preforming the radiopaque marker from a polymer doped with a radiopaque material and subsequently securing the radiopaque marker to the distal inner tubular member.

Abstract:

An intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) device includes a catheter body having a proximal portion and an opposing distal portion; a transducer array disposed adjacent the distal portion, the transducer array having a plurality of transducers and each of the plurality of transducers having a maximum width, wherein the plurality of transducers are positioned circumferentially around the catheter body with a minimum spacing between adjacent transducers that is at least twice as large as the maximum width.
