On August 23, 2010, the Utah Grizzlies signed Donovan to a professional contract for the 2010–11 ECHL season and, on August 3, 2011, the Grizzlies announced that he had been re-signed to play for the 2011–12 ECHL season.
Donovan attended Northeastern University where he played four years of NCAA Division I college hockey with the Northeastern Huskies men's ice hockey team.
