Abstract:

An apparatus for recording or reading high areal density holographically stored information with high signal-to-noise ratio. The apparatus comprises a holographic imaging system for recording or reconstructing a holographic image, having a first numerical aperture and a first focal length and an additional optical system for filtering the signal beam, having a second numerical aperture and a second focal length, wherein the numerical aperture of the additional optical system is less than the numerical aperture of the holographic imaging system and/or the focal length of the additional optical system is greater than the optical length of the holographic imaging system.

Abstract:

A method and an apparatus for recording at least two multiplexed holograms. Either an object beam or a reference beam is reflected from an aspherical reflecting surface. Either the reference beam impinging on a recording media at the selected storage location or the object beam impinging on the recording media at the selected storage location is rotated through a selected azimuthal angle about an axis that passes through a plane defined by the intersection of the object beam and the reference beam in the recording media, wherein an angle between the object beam and the reference beam impinging on the recording media is preserved.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for applying gradient edge detection to detect features in a biometric, such as a fingerprint, based on data representing an image of at least a portion of the biometric. The image is modeled as a function of the features. Data representing an image of the biometric is acquired, and features of the biometric are modeled for at least two resolutions. The method and apparatus improves analysis of both high-resolution images of biometrics of friction ridge containing skin that include resolved pores and lower resolution images of biometrics without resolved pores.

Abstract:

A data storage system is provided which utilizes cartridges having data storage media. The system has a housing having an optical data storage system, such as a holographic data storage system. Each cartridge has a window through which the media may be partially or fully removed when located in the housing, a slot through which the data storage drive can engage the media upon a positioning mechanism, and a shutter mechanism which closes the window and slot. When the cartridge is inserted in the housing, its shutter mechanism is engaged to open the window and slot of the cartridge, and the media is coupled through the slot to the positioning mechanism, which partially or fully removes the media from the cartridge through the window for presentation to the optical data storage system. Once operation on the media is completed by the optical data storage system, the positioning mechanism moves the media back into the cartridge and is decoupled from the media. The shutter mechanism is engaged to close the window and slot prior to ejecting the cartridge from the housing. When media is sensitive to external light, the cartridges prevent external light from reaching media contained therein when the window and slot are closed.

Abstract:

Calibration of holographic data storage systems (HDSS) is provided by utilizing holographic media () having calibration features which can be read, written, or read and written by a HDSS (). Calibration features may represent for example, surface-relief gratings, holographic recordings, amplitude varying regions, or magnetic regions, or a combination thereof, at locations on or within the media. One or more of the calibration features along media region () are media calibration features with media and format information, and other calibration features along region () are system calibration features for optically and mechanically aligning HDSS optics. The media () may have performance calibration features along region () which can be recorded by a HDSS and then read back to determine characteristics of the media. Different HDSS systems can read the calibration features of the media () when installed in each HDSS to obtain information about the media, and to optically and mechanically align the media for optimal operation with the media.

Abstract:

Holographic data storage systems are fixed after exposure during which data in the form of holograms are stored at locations in the medium (). Sufficient fixing energy in the form of light or other electromagnetic and thermal radiation is applied to the media () either by flooding the media, or to specific locations where the medium has been written. The energy is sufficient to expose the recorded medium () to prevent recording in the unused dynamic range thereof. Such recording can be a spurious recording made during readout or from spurious sources of light incident on the media. In one embodiment, the reference beam () produced in the course of holographic recording is redirected to locations on the media () which have already been recorded. The redirected beam post exposes the media to fix these locations against spurious recording. The integrity of the holographic data storage systems and the robustness thereof is improved by fixing methods and apparatus incorporating the invention.
