Magnetic films comprising iridium, manganese and nitrogen (IrMnN) are disclosed. Multi-layer structures including ferromagnetic layers deposited on the IrMnN films are also disclosed. The IrMnN films have a (200) texture and may act as seed layers and/or exchange biasing layers for the ferromagnetic layers deposited thereon. The multi-layer structures are useful in applications such as read sensors for magnetic recording heads and soft magnetic underlayers for perpendicular magnetic recording media.

Abstract:
A magnetic data storage medium may include a substrate, a magnetic recording layer, a protective carbon overcoat, and a monolayer covalently bound to carbon atoms adjacent a surface of the protective carbon overcoat. According to this aspect of the disclosure, the monolayer comprises at least one of hydrogen, fluorine, nitrogen, oxygen, and a fluoro-organic molecule. In some embodiments, a surface of a read and recording head may also include a monolayer covalently bound to carbon atoms of a protective carbon overcoat.
A recording medium for heat assisted magnetic recording includes a magnetic disc having a data zone portion and a non-data zone portion. A liquid lubricant is disposed on the non-data zone portion, and a solid lubricant disposed on the data zone portion. In one embodiment, the solid lubricant has a high thermal stability relative to the liquid lubricant.
