Libya: Nato bombing of Gaddafi forces 'relying on information from rebels'
The UK mission in Benghazi, inaugurated last month by Christopher Prentice, a former ambassador to Iraq and Jordan and currently the British envoy in Rome, started with a staff of six. This has expanded to around 40, most of them military officers advising the rebel leadership.
Mr Hague said: "We have stepped up our contribution to international efforts to relieve the humanitarian crisis in Libya, in particular in Misrata, and a UK diplomatic team led by Christopher Prentice has been liaising closely with the opposition in Benghazi."
In Washington, Admiral James Stavridis, Nato's supreme allied commander in Europe, told the Senate that intelligence reports had suggested "flickers" of al-Qaida or Hezbollah presence within the rebel movement. A UK diplomat, Christopher Prentice, the ambassador in Rome, met rebel leaders in their stronghold of Benghazi on Monday and Tuesday, the Foreign Office has said.
The Times also reported that Britain had sent Christopher Prentice, the Ambassador to Rome, to Benghazi to meet the opposition government, in what would appear to be the first known attempt by Britain to open diplomatic contact with the rebels.
