The invention relates to the discovery of two markers that are informative for one or more of tumorigenesis, tumor progression, and tumor aggressiveness associated with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The markers are the HOXA9 gene and the gene encoding death-associated protein kinase (DAP-kinase) of humans. Methods of diagnosing NSCLC and methods of assessing the degree of progression and aggressiveness of NSCLC tumors are disclosed, as are methods of inhibiting or alleviating NSCLC. The invention also includes screening methods for identifying compounds that are useful for alleviating, inhibiting, or preventing NSCLC.

In one embodiment, the present invention relates to an apparatus and methods of testing and predicting a patient's chemosensitivity before the patient begins chemotherapy. The present invention relates generally to an apparatus and methods for predicting disease and, more specifically, to an apparatus and methods for detecting and diagnosing cancer. One embodiment of the present invention may include generating mass spectra data from a sample taken from a subject and comparing the sample to a prediction model to assess whether or not the subject has a specific disease. Another embodiment of the present invention may include generating a first set of mass spectra data from samples taken from a population known to have a disease and generating a second set of mass spectra data from samples taken from a population known not to have the disease. The two sets of mass spectra data may then be compared to identify markers in the spectra data indicating the presence of the disease.
