Abstract:
A highly abrasion resistant and durable, low density ablator composition is provided that comprises a base silicone resin, silica microballoons as a filler, a catalyst, and a thinning fluid to control the viscosity of the base silicone resin. The density of the resulting composition is approximately 0. 32 g/cc yet the composition has excellent abrasion resistance. Furthermore, the ratio of filler to base silicone resin, by weight, is approximately 0. 91. The ablator composition is also RF (radio frequency) transparent, moisture resistant, and low cost. Methods of mixing the ablator composition and forming ablative structures are also provided.
Containment Apparatus For Collecting Fragments Of Foam Insulation
Claire E. Anton - Los Alamitos CA Robert Coker, III - Whitier CA Rodney Fancher - Anaheim CA James D. Gamboa - Anaheim CA Paul Keister - Huntington Beach CA
An apparatus comprises a containment chamber, a foam inlet, a vacuum port, and an air inlet. The containment chamber is a walled structure having a foam inlet. The surrounding of the foam inlet is shaped to correspond to the internal dimensions or surface structure of an aircraft fuselage or other aerospace structure. Because the surrounding of the foam inlet corresponds to the shape of the insulated structure, the containment apparatus may be mated with the portion of the structure having the insulation removed or captured. The vacuum port of the apparatus is connectable to a vacuum source, and the apparatus is utilized to suction particulate foam material from the insulated structure.

Abstract:
A sprayed on, semi-rigid, substantially closed cell foam insulation which forms an insulative layer directly on an interior wall or internal structural member associated with a skin of an aircraft fuselage. The foam insulation may comprise a polyurethane, substantially closed cell foam which is sprayed on to the interior wall of the fuselage to form a layer having a thickness of between about 0.25 inch-1.5 inch and a weight of between about 2 lbs. per cubic foot to about 3 lbs per cubic foot. The insulative layer forms a thermal and acoustic barrier and is highly resistant to the absorption of condensation and humidity. The foam insulation, being sprayed on, can be installed much more quickly than conventional blanket-type insulation material and with significantly less cost.
Method Of Thermally Processing Superplastically Formed Aluminum-Lithium Alloys To Obtain Optimum Strengthening
Rockwell International Corporation - Seal Beach CA
International Classification:
C22F 104
US Classification:
148564
Abstract:
Optimum strengthening of a superplastically formed aluminum-lithium alloy structure is achieved via a thermal processing technique which eliminates the conventional step of solution heat-treating immediately following the step of superplastic forming of the structure. The thermal processing technique involves quenching of the superplastically formed structure using static air, forced air or water quenching.
Elimination Of Aluminum-Lithium Sheet Anisotropy With Spf Forming

Rockwell International Corp. - Seal Beach CA
International Classification:
C22F 104
US Classification:
148564
Abstract:
A novel method is disclosed for removing or eliminating anisotropic material properties typically found in conventionally rolled or otherwise processed aluminum-lithium alloy products obtained from conventional aluminum fabrication mills. The method comprises imparting a predetermined amount of strain to the conventionally rolled alloy sheet whereby the alloy experiences dynamic recrystallization. Through this process, the mill-imposed crystallographic texturing, which initially sets up the undesired anisotropic characteristics, is eliminated. A preferred technique for imparting strain to the sheet stock is superplastic forming.
