Abstract:

This invention is designed to increase the heating efficiency of a conventional type fireplace. The fireplace heating channel consists of a hollow metal air conveying channel which is designed to fit closely against the multiple inside walls of a conventional fireplace in combination with a hollow metal flame guide vane that connects the upper inside portions of the side arms of the air channel. The flame guide vane is triangular in cross section and positioned horizontally and forward of the center panel of the air conveying channel so as to form a suitable passageway for the hot ascending fire gases. The entire assembly is moved upward during installation by means of vertically adjustable legs so as to position the horizontal base of the flame guide vane against the horizontal arch of a conventional fireplace thereby forcing the room air to enter the fire below the apex of the flame guide vane. This reduces the flow of excess room air up the chimney and, in addition, so directs the flow of incoming room that the rising fire gases are constrained to move upward against the center channel, thereby promoting the transfer of fire heat to the fireplace heating channel. The channel and flame guide vane are heated by the fire and room air is forced to make multiple horizontal passes through the fireplace heating channel.

Abstract:

This invention is designed to increase the heating efficiency of an existing conventional fireplace. The device consists of a hollow metal air conveying channel which is designed to fit closely against the multiple inside walls of an existing fireplace in combination with a hollow metal guide vane that connects the upper inside portions of the side arms of the air channel. The guide vane is triangular in cross section with the two lower sides surrounded by a V shaped metal plate, being spaced therefrom and thus forming an exhaust heat extraction channel which, in conjunction with a control damper, can force the hot fire gases to flow along these vane surfaces to transfer additional heat to the room air passing through the vane. The vane and V shaped exhaust channel assembly is positioned so as to form a hot gas passageway between the rear surface of the assembly and the upper portion of the center panel of the three sided air channel. An outer metal front closure is attached to the inner air channel subassembly, having two pairs of hinged doors providing for control of air input to fire, increased efficiency and maximum safety during untended periods of operation.

Abstract:

This invention is designed to provide a multiple increase in thermal efficiency of an existing conventional fireplace. The device consists of a hollow metal air conveying channel which is designed to fit closely against the inside walls of an existing fireplace without requiring structural modification for installation. When a fire is burning in the fireplace all the exposed surfaces of the air channel become heated. The internal blower and baffle system then direct the entering cool room air to make two horizontal passes through the heated air channel before returning to the room as hot air. To further increase heating efficiency of the air conveying channel, a flame guide radiation reflector vane connects the upper inside surfaces of the two forward facing arms of the channel. This radiation reflector vane is V-shaped in cross section with a front vertical surface that fits under the fireplace arch and a bottom surface that slants rearward and upward to guide incoming air more effectively into the fire combustion zone. This bottom surface is backed with insulation so radiant heat from the fire is not lost up the chimney throat but instead is used to raise the temperature of the air channel by means of reradiation of thermal energy from this high temperature bottom surface.
