Four US Female Soldiers Challenge Combat Exclusion Policy In Court
Marine 1st Lt. Colleen Farrell led an FET in Afghanistan, which was regularly in danger of drawing enemy fire, being ambushed or hit by IEDs. Although the teams she commanded lived and worked alongside infantrymen, they were prevented from fully participating in training with those troops.
"The gap between the policy and reality is bad for the armed forces, bad for service members and needs to be changed," added First Lt. Colleen Farrell of the US Marine Corps, speaking to reporters in a conference call.

The American Civil Liberties Union is representing Marine 1st Lt. Colleen Farrell, Marine Reserves Capt. Zoe Bedell, Army Staff Sgt. Jennifer Hunt and Air Guard Major Mary Jennings Hegar in the suit, filed Tuesday afternoon in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco. The four individual plaintiffs
Hunt and the other three women said the policy unfairly blocks them from promotions and other advancements open to men in combat. Three of the women are in the reserves. A fourth, Marine Corp Lt. Colleen Farrell, leaves active duty this week.
