sphinxes eventually fell apart. This happened because they were empty inside, and the lack of stability along with weakness from erosion made them collapse. M. Colleen Hamilton of Applied EarthWorks has stated that it is his and his teams mission to rescue the sphinxes before any more damage is done.

M. Colleen Hamilton, who is Historical archaeologist of Applied EarthWorks, stated it was imperative that the sphinxes be salvaged now, saying, The site is basically being destroyed through erosion. Its become more critical to try to salvage some materials before they disappear.
"It's a once-in-a-lifetime kind of site," said M. Colleen Hamilton, a senior historical archaeologist with Applied EarthWorks and project director for the excavation. "I've worked on sites all over the country, and I think this one could only happen in California."
