Gordie Howe's grandson finds his Saskatoon roots

• I get a little emotional just seeing him, Corey Howe says, turning his gaze to Gordies bronzed, stick-wielding figure. I imagine seeing his face its cool to have a family member, always, outside the arena.Corey Howe was there, too reluctantly, at first, because he had school commitments, and knew it would be frigid out there on this prairie town hed never seen. But his father, Murray, told him it would be worth his while, so he made the trek, re-connected with widespread family, climbed the steps At the banquet, he met a server named Davis Parkinson, and they hit it off. Soon, Corey Howe was making regular trips to Saskatoon. In April, the aspiring scientist moved into the city, chasing love and finding it in the tangle of his very own roots.Corey Howe is no stranger to the game that made his stubborn grandfather famous. He played hockey up until Grade 8 Ive got my dads size, though, he says wryly, and I just couldnt take the checks.I only know him as a grandpa, so I dont really think of him (as a hockey legend), Corey Howe says. Its funny; wed go somewhere, people would recognize him, and Im like oh, yeah hes super famous, and people love him to death. Our family just treated him as regular.As Corey Howe reminisces, Saskatoon Blades president Steve Hogle stops by with a surprise. Hes laboriously lugging the hulking Art Ross Trophy, which goes to the NHL scoring champion. Howes name is engraved on there six times, the first in 1951 and the last in 1963.
