Abstract:
A superconducting coil (12) having a plurality of superconducting layers (18) is provided. Each superconducting layer (18) may have at least one superconducting element (20) which produces an operational load. An outer support structure (24) may be disposed outwardly from the plurality of layers (18). A load transfer system (22) may be coupled between at least one of the superconducting elements (20) and the outer support structure (24). The load transfer system (22) may include a support matrix structure (30) operable to transfer the operational load from the superconducting element (20) directly to the outer support structure (24). A shear release layer (40) may be disposed, in part, between the superconducting element (20) and the support matrix structure (30) for relieving a shear stress between the superconducting element (20) and the support matrix structure (30). A compliant layer (42) may also be disposed, in part, between the superconducting element (20) and the support matrix structure (30) for relieving a compressive stress on the superconducting element (20).

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for impregnating the superconductors on a superconductor winding with epoxy such that a vacuum/pressure containment vessel, in which the winding is placed, allows epoxy to be introduced into the vessel whereby the epoxy eventually impregnates the superconductors through the application of various evacuating, pressuring and epoxy transporting steps.

Abstract:
In one aspect of the present invention a superconductive magnet for use in a magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy is provided. The magnet comprises a cylindrical coil form having a plurality of superconductive coils situated coaxially on the cylinder, spaced apart from one another. A plurality of pairs of thermal bridges each comprising a bar shaped section connecting a first and second end portion is also provided. The first end section has a greater surface are than the second end section. Each of the pairs of thermal bridges is situated between a respective pair of adjacent coils. The bar section of each of the thermal bridges extends axially between the adjacent coils. In each pair, the first end of one of the pair and the second end of the other of the pair are in thermal contact with one of the adjacent coils, the second end of one of the pair and the first end of the other of the pair are in thermal contact with the other coil of the adjacent pair. Each of the thermal bridges act as a heat flux amplifier in an opposite direction between the adjacent coils due to different end portion areas in contact with the adjacent coils.

Abstract:
A superconductive magnet having a superconductive coil located within a thermal shield located within a vacuum enclosure. A magnet re-entrant support assembly includes an outer support cylinder located between the vacuum enclosure and the thermal shield and includes an inner support cylinder located between the thermal shield and the superconductive coil. The outer support cylinder's first end is rigidly connected to the vacuum enclosure, and its second end is rigidly connected to the thermal shield. The inner support cylinder's first terminus is rigidly connected to the thermal shield near the outer support cylinder's second end, and its second terminus is located longitudinally between the outer support cylinder's first and second ends and is rigidly connected to the superconductive coil. Buckling resistance is improved by adding stiffening rings to the support cylinders.
Quench-Protecting Electrical Circuit For A Superconducting Magnet
A quench-protecting superconductive-magnet electrical circuit. An impregnated superconductive-switch wire is coupled to the leads of a cryostable superconductive-coil assemblage having series-coupled coil portions. Series-coupled fan-in resistive heaters are also coupled in parallel with corresponding coil portions and are positioned thermally proximate the superconductive-switch wire. Fan-out resistive heaters are coupled in parallel with corresponding coil portions and are positioned thermally proximate corresponding coil portions. A local quench in one coil portion activates its corresponding fan-in resistive heater which quenches the superconductive-switch wire which activates all of the fan-out resistive heaters which globally quenches all of the coil portions thereby preventing local quench damage.

Abstract:
This invention relates to an apparatus and method for measuring the resistance of superconductors. Structures of this type, generally, allow the resistance of the superconductor to be accurately measured in a non-destructive manner by using a bifilar coil which includes an integrated loop/switch formed from the bifilar coil.
Optimal Field Inhomogeneity Correction Coil Operation For Nmr Magnets
A method for operating magnet correction coils is provided through the control of correction coil currents. The currents are determined from field measurements through the use of an iterative weighting algorithm. The algorithm is iterative and adjusts the weights at each iteration so as to reduce the range of variation.
