Abstract:

Improved security between a client and a server in a computer network is provided by allowing either endpoint (the client or the server) to initiate request messages. In this way, it is possible to configure the system so that the server always makes the opening move of negotiation, allowing the location of the server to remain hidden until a legal session is established. Dynamic relocation of the server further hides the location of the server from unauthorized users. Additionally, each message may be authenticated individually as it is received, with the endpoint making no response to an unauthentic message, thus preventing attacks on its security. Finally, negotiation of both the encryption method and the key used in the encryption process allows for the rapid reconfiguration of encryption to protect against unauthorized users who may have broken the code.

Abstract:

A method is disclosed for managing a network having a plurality of network elements, where the network elements are configured to be interconnected to one another. A data structure is maintained that includes information about a link state for each network element in the plurality of network elements. The link state for each network element describes a connection between that network element and at least one other network element designated to be connected to that network element. A management policy is configured for the plurality of network elements by using link state information in the data structure to detect if any of the plurality of network elements are unreachable.

Magnetic alignment marks are recorded on a recording surface of a magnetic hard disk to mark the location where the disk is abutted against the hub of the spindle of a multiple-disk servo-writer. The alignment marks for each recording surface may be different so as to distinguish between top and bottom disk surfaces so that when the discs are assembled onto the spindle of a disk drive they may be assembled with the proper orientation, i. e. , the top surface is mounted “up. ” The marks may be large, low frequency patterns that are both written and detected by non contact means other than the servo-track writer's or the disk drive's heads.

Abstract:

A system and method for measuring the position of at least one field producing element (e. g. , a magnet) without a direct electrical or physical connection between the field producing element and one or more sensors. In one embodiment, the output from an array of sensors (e. g. , Hall Effect sensors) is curve fit using an algorithm having a characteristic bell curve (e. g. , curve fit tracking algorithm, center of gravity algorithm, etc. ) to determine at least one of an absolute or relative position associated with the field producing element and/or a property associated with the field producing element (e. g. , magnetic flux). Another embodiment is directed to detecting errors in one or more of the sensors and excluding the output of the faulty sensors in determining the position associated with the field producing element.
