A laryngeal mask of the type used to facilitate lung ventilation and the insertion of endo-tracheal tubes or related medical instruments through a patients laryngeal opening as used during general anesthesia, intensive care, or critical patient care. The mask includes an inflatable positioning shield formed to fit within a patients oropharynx and seal around the circumference of the laryngeal opening, the shield having an inflatable annular toroid peripheral portion, a contoured rear portion, and a recessed front. The mask also includes a flexible respiratory tube having an proximal end lumen, a gently curved tubular body of sufficient size to permit passage of endo-tracheal tubes, and related medical instruments, and a distal end passing through and secured to the proximal edge of the annular toroid peripheral portion. The distal end of the tube terminates at a distal lumen within the recessed front of the inflatable positioning shield such that tubes and instruments passing through the flexible respiratory tube will be directed into the laryngeal opening.
A catheter and needle system includes a solid piercing needle, a catheter, and a needle tip enclosure, as well as a method of utilization. The solid needle reduces the possibility of transmitting infectious agents to a user otherwise resulting from accidental needle punctures. The system has two configurations, a first for inserting the assembly into a patient, and a second for withdrawing and disposing of the piercing needle. The catheter has means for receiving, delivering and viewing fluids at the insertion site. The needle and enclosure operate cooperatively to enable medical procedures to be conducted without hinderance, and to automatically cleanse and enclose the piercing portion of the needle upon withdrawal. The system also provides for the safe withdrawal of the needle without the need to disturb the catheter once it is inserted.
An endo-tracheal tube retainer used to facilitate the removal of a laryngeal mask of the type used to facilitate lung ventilation and the insertion of endo-tracheal tubes or related medical instruments through a patient's laryngeal opening is provided. The endo-tracheal tube retainer includes a semi-rigid stylet having proximate and distal ends and a soft curved stylet cap secured to the proximal end. The endo-tracheal tube also includes a connection adapter that is tapered from front to rear for secure insertion within a range of endo-tracheal tubes, removably secured to the distal end.

Abstract:
A spine fixation device is described that includes an alignment plate having top and bottom surfaces for temporary attachment to a pair of adjacent vertebrae on a body, at least two surgical screws, and at least one spacer. The alignment plate is adapted not to move transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the spine. The plate includes at least two openings spaced from each other a distance such that at least two of the openings open onto adjacent vertebrae, and has a predetermined angle formed therein so as to position adjacent vertebrae at a predetermined angle. The adjacent vertebrae are thus fixedly secured at the predetermined angle by the plate.
A method of making a laryngeal airway of the type that includes a respiratory tube and an inflatable positioning shield having a base and an inflatable, hollow peripheral portion is described herein. The method includes introducing at least one molding material into a mold, wherein the mold has a cavity defined by internal walls, wherein the internal walls conform to external walls of the laryngeal mask, and wherein the mold has a core within its cavity that is adapted to form the hollow portions of the laryngeal airway.
A laryngeal mask of the type used to facilitate lung ventilation and the insertion of endo-tracheal tubes or related medical instruments through a patient's laryngeal opening as used during general anesthesia, intensive care, or critical patient care is described that includes an inflatable positioning and a respiratory tube. The inflatable positioning shield is formed to fit within a patient's oropharynx, and has an inflatable, hollow peripheral portion, a pliable base in fluid communication with the peripheral portion, a shield recess formed after inflation of the peripheral portion, and a rear portion formed between the posterior base and the peripheral portion after inflation of the peripheral portion, wherein the posterior base has a recessed front portion. The respiratory tube has a proximal end lumen, a curved tubular body of sufficient size to permit the passage of endo-tracheal tubes or related medical instruments, and a distal end passing through and secured to the rear portion of the positioning shield. The distal end terminates at a distal lumen, which passes through and is secured to the rear portion of the positioning shield such that tubes and instruments passing through the respiratory tube will be directed into the laryngeal opening.
A method of making a laryngeal airway of the type that includes a respiratory tube and an inflatable positioning shield having a base and an inflatable, hollow peripheral portion is described herein. The method includes introducing at least one molding material onto internal walls of a mold, wherein the mold has a cavity defined by internal walls that conform to the external wall of the laryngeal airway, and wherein only a sufficient amount of the molding material is introduced onto the internal walls of the mold that is necessary to create external walls of the laryngeal airway having a desired thickness and allowing the molding material to cure about the internal walls, thereby forming laryngeal mask.
A laryngeal mask of the type used to facilitate lung ventilation and the insertion of endo-tracheal tubes or related medical instruments through a patient's laryngeal opening as used during general anesthesia, intensive care, or critical patient care. The mask includes an inflatable positioning shield formed to fit within a patient's oropharynx and seal around the circumference of the laryngeal opening, the shield having an inflatable annular toroid peripheral portion, a contoured rear portion, and a recessed front.
