Disclosed is an electro magnetic radiation polarization converter, available in various combinations of the embodiments features, used to convert non polarized radiation into a single polarization state, which may be utilized in many devices requiring polarized radiation. Disclosed is a unique geometric configuration and positing of optic layers that cause polarization separation by reflection and polarization conversion utilizing birefringent materials as well as phase retardation materials to convert incident radiation to a linear or elliptical polarization.
A thin optic electro magnetic radiation polarization converter, available in various combinations, used to convert non-polarized radiation into a single polarization state, which may be utilized in many devices requiring polarized radiation. A unique geometric configuration and positioning of optic layers that cause polarization separation by radiation concentration, reflection and polarization conversion utilizing birefringent materials to convert incident radiation to a linear polarization.
This invention is a wide field surveillance, monocentric, refractive optical system with inherent features being, non-mechanical, compact, high resolution, a field of view up to two Pi steradians solid angle. The optics design uses a single optical system and multiple flat image collection devices. Multiple fiber plates translate and map the image off of the curved image surface to the flat image collection devices. The fiber plates also act to translate the image into a larger volume as compared to the curved image surface, allowing required volume for the multiple image collection devices. This invention uses a single refractive optical system with multiple CCD or CMOS detectors. Advantages over prior art are simple optical system, rugged optics, high resolution and single optics which is easily manufactured.
Disclosed are designs for a reflector optic that acts as a polarization converter optic, available in various combinations of the embodiments features, used to convert non polarized radiation into a single polarization state, which may be utilized in many devices requiring polarized radiation. Disclosed is a unique geometric configuration and positioning of optic substrates arranged as layers that cause polarization separation by radiation refraction and reflection and polarization conversion utilizing birefringent materials to convert incident radiation to a single linear polarization.
Lamp With High Efficiency Linear Polarized Light Output
What is described is are two techniques to improve the efficiency of a lamp, one being energy recycling and the second being linear polarization recycling both of which can be implemented singularly or together in an incandescent or gas discharge lamp outputting an improved illumination and/or linear polarized illumination at a improved efficiency; the linear polarized lamp being desirable for use in an LCD projector and other applications requiring linear polarized illumination. The lamp utilizes one or more wasted energy recycling techniques. One technique is use of reflective polarization filter over the exit aperture that reflects wasted polarization back to the surface of the reflector wherein the polarization is partially randomized by the dielectric reflective coating on the lamp reflector for recycling and redirecting the polarized radiation back to the exit aperture; another technique is to place a candoluminescent material in proximity of the filament, housed in a transparent envelope, to intercept the wasted radiation and be heated to output desirable illumination via candoluminescence. The processes described herein with the lamp reflector and the discriminative filters act as an energy trap, allowing only the desirable polarization and/or wavelengths to escape while the recycled polarization is randomized internal to the energy trap, and the wasted wavelengths are used to heat the candoluminescent material internal to the energy trap with the candoluminescent material acting as a secondary luminescence source.

Abstract:
A general service incandescent lamp including a housing with electrically conductive base (s); a transparent envelope; a radiation discriminative reflective film reflecting wasted radiation for recycling; a electrically driven filament; wherein an improvement is a new use of lightweight low thermal capacity insulator of fibrous ceramic material spatially formed to shade the lamp base from filament and/or reflected energy from a reflective film; wherein an improvement is to use the ceramic to shape the output beam to the solid angle of radiation; wherein an improvement contains a low thermal capacity insulator with candoluminescence material that when thermally exited emits radiation via candoluminescence improving the lamp's efficacy and color; wherein an improvement contains a larger optical spot size focusing requirement for the reflective mirror as compared to the spot size formed by the lamp's filament cross section, wherein an improvement is use of a polarized discriminative reflective film.
