Wisconsin man who killed neighbor teen gets life term
"I want him to be accountable for what he did to my son, Darius Simmons. I want him to have life in prison," she said at Monday's sentencing. "He showed no remorse and said justice was served. He is a menace to society."
Patricia Larry, Simmons' mother, told the court Monday: "My pain is so great. I wasn't sure I would be able to do this. I'm here for my son Darius Simmons. I want (Spooner) to have life in prison. He is a menace to society. We need to put the guns down. No mother should have to go through this."
The jury rejected an insanity defense mounted by Spooner after he was convicted Wednesday of first-degree intentional homicide for fatally shooting Darius Simmons. The verdict ends the second phase of the weeklong trial and effectively ensures Spooner will spend the rest of his life in prison."We know that John Spooner caused the death of Darius Simmons," he said. "The question is whether at that time on that day whether he was suffering from a mental disease" that allows "the law to treat him differently who might not have been suffering from such a disease."
