Abstract:Saliva sample collection systems are configured with special attention to ease-of-use for the unskilled user and safe transport and delivery by a conventional delivery services such as Federal Express. A sealed cavity is formed by tight coupling of two primary elements: a receiving vessel element and a sealing cap element. The receiving vessel has integrated therewith: a standing means, a fill-line window, a funnel system, a knife, a threadset, and containment tube among others. A complementary cap element includes a cooperating threadset, label receiving surface, gripping surface, seal means and reservoir with piercable thin-film membrane. These two primary elements may be accommodated in an application-specific shipping container which support two shipping modes whereby the system may be shipped safely to and from a donor user each way in a different shipping mode.

Abstract:A method for collaborating remotely that incorporates the use of high-resolution computer imagery, or any other source of high-resolution video, is provided. The method provides for converting high-resolution video or analog RGB computer video into for example, High-Definition Television (HDTV) signals or keep the RGB computer signal in its original format but in digital form. These signals are then compressed, encoded and transmitted over a broadband communication network. At a remote site, the signals are decompressed, decoded and displayed on an HDTV-capable display device. Additionally, the HDTV signals can be reformatted back into their original high-resolution video format or analog RGB computer signals for viewing on an appropriate video display device. If the signals are kept in their original RGB format but in digital form, this last step would not be required, only a conversion back to analog form would be needed. Broadcast and interactivity can be provided to multiple sites, and include multiple computer and/or video screens. Local and remote mouse and keyboard control of the computer imagery or other high-resolution video source are also provided in the method. Additional interactivity is provided by incorporating video marking devices into the system. Collaboration is further supported by the inclusion of audio/video teleconferencing methods and technologies, both NTSC(PAL)-based, and HDTV-based. Access to a number of various computers and high-resolution video sources is provided via a matrix video/keyboard/mouse/serial switching system. Security is provided via encryption and the control systems employed. Records of the collaborative session are provided by the inclusion of HDTV video-recording devices. Ergonomic support is provided by a master control system that configures all devices for specific forms of remote collaboration.

Abstract:Blood sample collection apparatus and kits are devised as easy-to-use, reduced pain devices operable by persons not having medical training or other expertise or knowledge. A flexible strip having adhesives on two portions of a first side accommodate therebetween and absorbent pad and substrate with microstructures. The substrate includes microstructures arranged to gently penetrate or pierce skin and cause a small amount of blood to pass to the external surface of a user's flesh. An absorbent pad receives and absorbs a blood sample therein. The absorbent pad may additionally support a plurality of chemical agents which further advances mobility of blood in the collection system. These chemical agents may include anticoagulants and blood anticlotting agents to facilitate blood transfer from a donor to the absorbent pad. Additionally, these systems may also include a blood preservative to stabilize blood collected for an extended shipping and transfer period. These blood sample collection systems may further include a numbing agent to improve comfort of use.

Abstract:A computer alert to system and apparatus is arranged about DNA sequence markers whereby the genome of a specific human subject is considered in view of a plurality of discrete rules to affect alerts which may be generated and transmitted in electronic form over standardized e-mail systems (Internet/SMTP protocol for example) to a user workstation which may be equipped with a browser or custom application (includes a special genome viewers, review tools; etc.). Alerting systems described in this disclosure included mechanical/a chemical systems for analyzing a human DNA sample to produce a genomic data set representing genetic indicators or markers on alleles of interest including those as well SNPs associated with important trial traits disease and characteristics. A genome dataset is stored as a portion of a data a record having a one-to-one correspondence with membership in a membership database. A dynamic rules that of its reality of discrete rules provides a query engine with logic which can be executed against membership data stored in accordance with standardized database procedures to produce a genomic result set from which appropriate alerts may be formed in an alert to module computer apparatus. These alerts may be characterized as including multimedia information and they may be prefer to play conveyed to membership with whom the underlying data is associated.

Abstract:Biological sample collection kits are devised with physical features to enable a high performance collection system which delivers preprocessed biological matter via conventional shipping means to a testing laboratories. In particular, untrained and unskilled users deposit biological matter such as saliva or blood into a receiving vessel. By sealing the container, the user causes release of a premixed solution containing preservatives and optionally lysis reagents. In addition, a purification agent is arranged to bind to target molecules and facilitate their removal from solution. These time consuming processes occur while the sample is in transit to the testing facility such that when it arrives, it is in a preconditioned state immediately ready for execution of washing steps. Thus, the high performance containers taught herein are useful for collection biological samples and performing initial process steps on received matter—steps which are largely effected during the shipping stage of the transfer process.

Abstract:An acoustic borehole well logging method and apparatus for measuring azimuthal anisotropy of a formation traversed by a borehole using at least one multipole transducer. In a preferred embodiment, a dipole wave transmitter and at least one detector sensitive to dipole waves are employed. In an alternative preferred embodiment, a monopole transmitter and at least one multipole detector are employed. In the inventive method, two acoustic wave arrivals are detected, each associated with a different azimuthal orientation relative to the longitudinal axis of the borehole (i. e. each is transmitted by a multipole transmitter oriented at such angle, or is detected by a multipole detector oriented at such angle, or both). The inventive apparatus preferably includes at least one transducer unit including two or more multipole transmitters (or two or more multipole detectors) oriented at different azimuthal angles relative to the tool's longitudinal axis.
