Abstract:
An extruded polymeric foam comprising a styrenic polymer and an olefinic polymer, the olefinic polymer in an amount less than the amount of the styrenic polymer. The styrenic polymer and the olefinic polymer are present as a blend, preferably free of an interpolymer or compatiblizer. The foam has a density below about 36 kg/m(as measured by ASTM D1622-03), a vertical compressive strength greater than about 100 kPa (as measured by ASTM D1621-04) and a compressive strength ratio greater than about 0.35.

Abstract:
Provide a foamable polymer composition containing: (i) a thermoplastic polymer matrix and a blowing agent, (a) the thermoplastic polymer matrix containing a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer having a weight-averaged molecular weight in a range of 90,000 to 150,000 and polymerized acrylonitrile concentration in a range of five to twenty weight-percent relative to total polymer matrix weight; and (ii) a blowing agent containing water, 1,1,1,2-tetrafluouroethane and at least one of difluoromethane and 1,1-dilluoroethane; (b) cooling the foamable polymer composition to a foaming temperature; and (c) extruding the foamable polymer composition and allowing the blowing agent to expand the foamable polymer composition into a polymeric foam having an average vertical cell size in a range of 0.5 millimeters to 1.8 millimeters and a density in a range of 24 to 40 kilograms per cubic meter and a Normalized Roughness Quotient of 3.5 or less in a Milled Surface Test.

Abstract:
Prepare polymeric foam articles having low yellowing using a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer that contains less than 145 weight-parts acrylonitrile dimer and less than 8,500 weight-parts acrylonitrile trimer per million weight parts acrylonitrile copolymer.
Thermally Insulating Foam With Vertically Elongated Cells
An extruded polymer foam has a polymer matrix with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer and infrared attenuator and cell having an average size in the foam vertical direction of 150 micrometers or less, a ratio of vertical cell E size to extrusion direction cell size that is greater than one and a cell anisotropic ratio that is greater than 1.1; the foam having a P-Ratio of 0.7 or less, less than 0.2 moles of hydrocarbon blowing agent in the cells per kilogram of foam; a density of 20-48 kilograms per cubic meter and a 25-year thermal conductivity that is 0.030 Waters per meter-Kelvin or less when free of fluorinated blowing agents and less than 0.029 Watts per meter-Kelvin when containing fluorinated blowing agent.
