Shannon wrote the book at age 19, after turning a slew of rejections of her first manuscript into a short internship with literary agent David Godwin while she was a student at Oxford University. "Because publishing is such a messy business and very unpredictable, most publishers generally take a punt (chance) on first novels," says David Godwin, Shannon's London-based agent. "However, they rarely throw masses of marketing money at them to support that effort."

Shannon emerges from 'Oxford bubble' with 'Bone Season'
At 17, Aurora was circulated to Britain's book-agent community, but all Shannon got in return was rejection slips. The only agent who gave her feedback, though he chose at the time not to offer her representation, was David Godwin.

Pippa Dropped? Pippa Middleton Parts With Literary Agent After Poor Book ...
Now just months later, agent David Godwin has said that he has parted ways with Pippa. He has issued a short statement saying that he was "very sorry it has happened, but yes, it is true: I no longer represent Pippa and I wish her every good luck."

Soldiers recall massacre suspect's behavior in Afghanistan
Waiting for a helicopter to evacuate him, Bales exchanged a few words with fellow soldiers, at one point signaling to one of them that he wanted some bleach to clean his pants. He seemed apologetic, Cpl. David Godwin said. "He said, 'I thought I was doing the right thing.'"

Earlier, the two men said, they had been chatting about football, and Bales had joined in, offering up some statistics. But the conversation cooled when King, talking outside the room to one of Bales friends, Cpl. David Godwin, learned the true scope of what Bales had allegedly done.
Cpl. David Godwin testified that Bales seemed normal as they shared whiskey, discussed Bales' anxiety over whether he'd get a promotion and talked about another soldier who lost his leg a week in an attack a week earlier.
