Abstract:

A smoking article may include a cigarette incorporated within an electrically powered aerosol generating device that acts as a holder for that cigarette. The smoking article possesses at least one form of tobacco. The smoking article also possesses a mouth-end piece that is used by the smoker to inhale components of tobacco that are generated by the action of heat upon components of the cigarette. A representative smoking article possesses an outer housing incorporating a source of electrical power (e.g., a battery), a sensing mechanism for powering the device at least during periods of draw, and a heating device (e.g., at least one electrical resistance heating element) for forming a thermally generated aerosol that incorporates components of tobacco. During use, the cigarette is positioned within the device, and after use, the used cigarette is removed from the device and replaced with another cigarette.

Abstract:

A neutral circuit current monitoring device detects at least one current level, which includes harmonic currents, flowing in a neutral circuit of a power distribution system such that preliminary warnings can be given to personnel operating the system before serious overload problems exist. Warnings can be given via audible and/or visual alarms and/or by electrical contacts which can be used to operate auxiliary devices. Preferably, two current levels defined by interchangeable secondary fuses within the monitoring circuit are detected with a first or low current level in the neutral circuit being calculated to also indirectly monitor for overheating of the distribution transformer caused mainly by circulating third harmonic currents in the transformer primary. The low current level permits personnel to investigate and correct a developing problem before it occurs. Preferably, a second or high current level of the current sensor can be set at a value less than 100% of the phase current rating.

Abstract:

An optical source for use in an optical sensing system such as a wavelength division multiplexing system. The source produces an optical interrogation signal comprising a plurality of component signals, each component signal comprising light in a wavelength band different from the wavelength bands of the other component signals. The source comprises a concave diffraction grating, means for forming an aperture at which the interrogation signal will be formed, and a plurality of optical emitters. Each emitter is positioned such that the emitter output signal strikes the concave diffraction grating, and is focused onto the aperture, such that a portion of the emitter signal enters the aperture and forms one of the component signals. As a result, the component signal wavelengths are not sensitive to temperature-induced fluctuations in the emitter output signal.

Abstract:

A spectrograph usable as a demultiplexer/detector in a wavelength division multiplexing optical system. The spectrograph comprises a planar waveguide and a detector array. The planar waveguide has a dispersive edge having an inwardly concave shape, an input edge, and a straight output edge. The dispersive edge has a reflective diffraction grating formed on it, the grating having a variable line spacing. An optical input signal comprising a plurality of different wavelength ranges enters the waveguide at the input edge, and travels through the waveguide and strikes the grating. The grating focuses the optical energy in each of the wavelength ranges at a focal spot at the output edge, the position of each focal spot being a function of wavelength. The detector array comprises a plurality of photodetectors positioned along a straight line, such that the photodetectors are positioned at the focal spots. Each photodetector therefore detects the optical energy in one of the input ranges.

A method and apparatus for automated smoking to replicate a predetermined draw profile of a smoking article is disclosed. In preferred embodiments, the smoking apparatus is digitally controlled and includes simulated flexible lips which are closed during puff phases of a recorded draw profile and which are open during smolder phases of a recorded draw profile.
