Abstract:

A network gateway is configured to facilitate on line and off line bi-directional communication between a number of near end data and telephony devices with far end data termination devices via a hybrid fiber coaxial network and a cable modem termination system. The described network gateway combines a QAM receiver, a transmitter, a DOCSIS MAC, a CPU, a voice and audio processor, an Ethernet MAC, and a USB controller to provide high performance and robust operation. Abstract:

In one aspect the present invention describes an electronic circuit for transmitting voice packet data over a wireless network with an upstream transmission mode and a downstream transmission mode. The circuit comprises a first phase-lock loop (PLL) for locking a first clock to a time stamp signal, wherein the first clock synchronizes upstream data transmission over the wireless network; and a second PLL for locking a second clock to the time stamp signal, wherein the second clock is used for sampling voice data for downstream voice data transmission over the wireless network.

Abstract:

Satellite communications are carried out using the Data Over Cable Interface Specification (DOCSIS). Satellite modems are notified of upstream channel congestion by inserting a congestion notification message in a medium access protocol (MAP) message for the upstream channel. Specifically, the congestion notification message is inserted in an unused field of the MAP message, such as the explicit congestion notification (ECN) field. The MAP message can also carry other characteristics of the upstream channel, including priority threshold, multicast access burst availability, and available bandwidth.

Abstract:

A downstream adaptive modulation system and method. The downstream adaptive modulation system comprises a wireless access termination system and one or more wireless modems. The wireless access termination system includes a plurality of queues and a parser. The parser parses data traffic onto the plurality of queues. Each queue is associated with a different coding and modulation scheme. Each of the one or more wireless modems receives data traffic from the plurality of queues based on the wireless modem's ability to demodulate and decode the signal from each of the plurality of queues. When a wireless modem experiences a change in signal strength, the present invention enables the wireless modem to adapt to data from other queues to compensate for the change in signal strength. Thus, if the signal strength improves over a period of time, the wireless modem may receive data at a higher order modulation and FEC code rate. If the signal strength weakens over a period of time, the wireless modem may receive data at a lower order modulation and FEC code rate.

Abstract:

A system and method for providing upstream adaptive modulation. Burst parameters associated with a range of data interval usage codes (IUCs) are defined. Each of the data IUCs has a different modulation order and forward error correction (FEC). The SNR and codeword error rate for each satellite modem in the network are monitored. The data IUCs are dynamically assigned to different satellite modems within an upstream channel based on SNR and/or codeword error rate to enable each of the satellite modems in the upstream channel to achieve maximum bandwidth efficiency during upstream data transmissions. Bandwidth requests are received from the satellite modems and granted. The grant includes the assigned data IUC. The data bursts received in the upstream channel are each processed using the parameters from the assigned IUC for each of the satellite modems sending data in the upstream channel. When any of the satellite modems' SNR and/or codeword error rate changes, the data IUC for that satellite modem is changed accordingly.

Abstract:

A direct division modulator is provided. The direct division modulator includes a symbol mapper converting the input data from a binary bitstream to a desired frequency deviation, such as where the frequency deviation data encodes the information from the bitstream. A converter generates a divide value using the desired frequency deviation information, and a summer adds an average value to the divide value. A converter quantizes the divide value and shapes quantization noise associated with the quantized divide value. A divider modulates a reference signal with the quantized divide value and generates an output signal.

Abstract:

A system and method for minimizing the frequency error of satellite modem signals at a satellite gateway. The gateway downstream baud (symbol) clock and the elements that control the upstream frequency (i. e. , local oscillators in the conversion chain, A/D sample clocks) are locked to a common frequency reference. The gateway sends upstream satellite frequency offset information, such as satellite ephemeris data from which to calculate Doppler offset, to the satellite modem. The satellite modem locks the frequency of the satellite modems master oscillator to the recovered baud rate using a frequency locked loop. The satellite modem uses its master oscillator as the carrier reference for the upstream frequency up conversion. The satellite modem uses or calculates the upstream satellite frequency offset and compensates for this offset by shifting its center frequency.
