Abstract:

A method and apparatus for an icing simulation system. The icing simulation system comprises a wind tunnel, a nozzle system, and a controller. The nozzle system is configured to spray drops of water within the wind tunnel. The controller is configured to control a number of properties of the water in the nozzle system such that the nozzle system sprays the drops of the water with different sizes for a desired type of icing condition.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for generating a flow of heated air in an airfoil model of an inlet of an aircraft engine. Heated air is sent into a duct system associated with the airfoil model of the inlet of the aircraft engine. The heated air is circulated within the airfoil model of the inlet of the aircraft engine using the duct system in a manner that simulates air flowing in the inlet of the aircraft engine.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for simulating icing conditions using a wind tunnel is provided. Water drops are sprayed from a number of nozzles into the wind tunnel. A mist of cryogenic liquid is sprayed into a path of the water drops downwind of the nozzles in the wind tunnel, wherein the mist of cryogenic liquid turns the water drops into ice crystals.

An example modular environmental control chamber (MECC) includes an outer chamber formed by an outer chamber housing section enclosing an outer face of a section of fuselage and an inner chamber formed by an inner chamber housing section enclosing an inner face of the section of fuselage. An inner chamber airflow delivery and return system includes an inner chamber blower for directing humidity-controlled air to the inner chamber through an air inflow aperture of the inner chamber housing section and an inner chamber air return duct connected to an air outflow aperture of the inner chamber housing section.
