Abstract:
Described herein are a method and system for analyzing the security of a computer network. According to various implementations, there is a device adapter associated with each device that has a significant impact on the security of the network (e. g. , routers, switches, gateways, or “significant hosts”). The device adapter, which may be implemented as a piece of software executing remotely from the device, queries the device to determine what its security settings are (e. g. , its firewall rules). The device adapter conducts the query using whichever form of communication the device requires (e. g. , telnet, HTTP) and using whichever command set the device requires. Each type of device on the network has a software model associated with it. For example, there may be a router model, a switch model, a firewall model, and a gateway model. The model is made up of a series of rule sets.

Abstract:
A method and appertaining system for implementing the method are provided that utilize predefined Best Practice Templates that are rules/criteria for assessing the security of a particular network and devices on the network. A value is determined for each object and connection within a network as to whether it passes or fails one of the Best Practice criteria, and a pass ratio is determined for a particular Best Practice. Numerous Best Practice tests may be run, and an overall total value based on the collective sum of the Best Practice measurements is determined. This value can be utilized to provide a user with information that relates to the overall security of a network and can be used in compliance determinations and network architecture design.

Abstract:
A file is separated into three sections: a root, one or more fragments, and a fragment index. The root, which is uncompressed, maintains relationship information regarding fragments within the file. The fragments contain the actual data and are compressed, and the index, which is uncompressed, provides a list of all the fragments and, for example, an identification of any attributes associated with those fragments. Using this nomenclature, selective compression and decompression documents is possible.

Abstract:
A method for expressing the content of data interchange format messages, such as Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) documents, in a markup language, such as Extensible Markup Language (XML). One or more XML documents are created which define an XML data dictionary expressing the EDI semantics for transaction sets, segments and elements. The data dictionary can be generated as plural files each representing a piece of the EDI semantics. Pieces of the EDI document are read and used to generate XML tags to define elements of the XML document. Attributes and values of the XML elements are set based on the data dictionary and established rules. The use of the data dictionaries permits the human readable metadata of EDI to be incorporated into an XML document expressing the underlying data of an EDI document.

Abstract:
A housing for fiber optic components reduces stress on optical fibers and protects the components from environmental shock and vibration. The housing includes a protective body having a receiving space wherein the fiber optic component is positioned. A rigid adhesive applied to the fibers in a specific stress reducing profile near the ends of the receiving space secures the component out of contact with the wall of the receiving space without inducing stress on the jacketless optical fibers. A gel support material fills the receiving space surrounding the component and providing vibration isolation. The invention is particularly uses for housing fiber optic couplers which are subject to shock, vibration, and temperature extremes.
