Abstract:
A hand-holdable structure implementing electrodes to enable good skin-electrode contact to acquire ECG readings is disclosed. Specifically, the structure is shaped to enable patients to apply a simple gentle grip to have a reliable skin-electrode contact and to automatically commence ECG tracing transmission to a patient monitoring station. In one embodiment the structure incorporates an RF telemetry head to simultaneously transfer IMD stored data in conjunction with the ECG tracings. The structure independently or in combination with the RF telemetry head is adaptable to a system of data communications with a programmer or equivalent instrument to transfer ECG and IMD data to a remotely located physician station or patient data storage server. The system is also adaptable for use with a web-enabled network such as, without limitation, the Internet, intranet, World Wide Web, extranet or equivalent.

Abstract:
A method treats a patient for adult-onset dementia of the Alzheimer's type by removing a portion of the patient's cerebrospinal fluid, preferably (although not necessarily) by transporting the fluid to another portion of the patient's body. An apparatus for removing cerebrospinal fluid includes (1) a conduit with a first opening and a second opening, the first opening of the conduit being disposed in fluid communication with a space within a patient's subarachnoid space, the second opening being disposed in fluid communication with another portion of the patient's body; and (2) a flow rate control device attached to the conduit.

Abstract:
A multi-cartridge dispenser for delivering two liquid medications through a single needle. The dispenser includes independent dual channel metering mechanism, dual channel drive mechanisms, and dual channel lock and pullback mechanisms. The wing must be in its "up" position for metering to take place. The wing reciprocatingly moves a driver between a pre-injection position and a post-injection position to reciprocatingly advance the leadscrews upon an injection stroke. The dosage indicator automatically rotates to its initial zero position upon the injection stroke. The lock and pullback mechanism automatically prevents rotation of the leadscrew upon metering and injection. It also locks out the cartridge retainers so that the retainers can be removed from the housing only while the wing is in its "down" position. The pullback sleeve unloads a pullback key during a cartridge change in order to enable the leadscrew to be spun freely back to its home position.

Abstract:
A device including an integrally formed membrane oxygenator and heat exchange device positioned in a single housing. The device includes a thermally conductive body formed with a plurality of blood pathways on its surface, and a gas permeable membrane, or membranes positioned in the housing in substantial contact with the heat exchange body to cover or lie within a portion of each of the pathways. The membrane defines a gas pathway separate from the blood pathway through which a gas is directed. The blood is directed through the individual blood pathways. The device also includes various ports and passageways for delivering the blood to the individual channels, and for collecting and removing the blood from the device.

Abstract:
A hand-held dual liquid medication injector have dual, bi-directional dosage metering mechanisms for permitting a variable dosage amount for each cartridge of liquid medication. The medications are mixed within a manifold having a valved mixing chamber and are injected via a single cannula. The mixing chamber is valved such that backflow of mixed or unmixed medications into the cartridges is prevented. An injection mechanism, independent of the metering mechanism, loads and injects the liquid medication. In one embodiment, downward movement of the injection mechanism during injection is translated into horizontal movement by the plunger mechanism. In another embodiment, a power-assisted plunger mechanism accomplishes injection.
Treatment Of Frequently Touched Surfaces To Improve Hygiene
A method for treating a surface touched by people to reduce an amount of microbes transferred to people touching the surface, the method comprising the step of depositing a conformal coating onto the surface, the coating comprising an ablative layer, the ablative layer being formed of a material sufficiently soft or frangible such that the ablation layer is worn away in response to repeated human contact, said coating comprising a material that is hydrophobic when the conformal coating has cured.
