Abstract:

A structure that allows both axial and radial alignment between a laser diode and optical fiber to be achieved in a single attachment process. The structure incorporates an optics tube, fiber holder, laser diode and heat sink. The fiber holder is affixed to the inside surface at one end of the optics tube and retains a segment of fiber in axial alignment with and close proximity to the laser diode. The heat sink is placed into the opposite end of the optics tube and serves to draw energy in the form of heat away from the laser diode. The laser diode is powered via an electrical lead that attaches to a metalized ceramic substrate located between the laser diode and the heat sink. The symmetrical design of the structure is rigid and substantially insensitive to thermal and mechanical stresses that cause misalignment in planar designs of similar dimensional proportion. The optics tube and heat sink elements of the structure are substantially cylindrical in shape to allow high precision parts, as the heat sink and optics tube are easily turned and abrasively finished using standard machining equipment.

Abstract:

A method and apparatus are provided for securing an optical component, such as a lens, into a receptacle hole. Abstract:

A method for bonding thermally-mismatched elements of a traveling wave tube employs a metallic plate of undulating character. The plate is located at the region of the interface between tube elements formed of materials of materially-differing thermal character such as the ceramic termination piece and an adjacent sever pole piece of copper. Through either a brazing or a sintering process, pluralities of bonds are formed at points of tangency between the plate and the two elements of differing thermal expansion coefficients. As a result, a good heat flow path, accompanied by a more stable r. f. interface, is formed between the materials that is not subject to fracture as are prior art diffusion bonds.

A laser system is provided for supplying high power, stable light intensity via an aperture limited delivery system to an application requiring continuous light output intensity in spite of the laser source being subjected optical feedback noise caused by external system and delivery system perturbations that cause fluctuation in laser source power intensity. Non-stable light intensity in the output is due to environmental temperature changes, and phase and amplitude changes caused by system induced perturbations such as by movement of the aperture limited delivery system and optical artifacts of the optical elements, comprising the aperture limited delivery system, introducing noise into the feedback in the laser system changing the output intensity pattern of the delivered power beam. This can be substantially remedied by the employing a monolithic, multiple, independent single mode laser source which is substantially unaffected by this noise.

Abstract:

A hermetically sealed package for an optoelectronic device such as a diode laser comprises a side wall welded to a thermally conductive heat sink mount, and a lid welded to the side wall. Testing and alignment of the device are performed before the attachment of the side wall to the mount. Feedthroughs for optical fibers and electrical connections run through the side wall. The feedthrough seals are established within projections extending away from the side wall, to protect the seals from melting during welding steps. A high-resistivity piece is present at the interface between the side walls and the base, to provide heating localized to the interface, and thereby reduce the heating of the laser during welding. The mount is pressed into a receiving structure, which is attached to an external heat sink. The bottom surface of the mount protrudes from the receiving structure, and is in direct contact with the external heat sink.

Abstract:

A loss button for a traveling wave tube. The front and rear planar surfaces of the ceramic pill-shaped button body are of coated metallic composition. The periphery is uncoated to permit r. f. energy to enter the button through thee cavity of the planar, metallic spacer into which the button is inserted. By coating the body surfaces, the button itself acts as a resonant cavity for attenuation of a predetermined bandwidth so that the dimensional changes that occur during heating to the surrounding and adjacent metallic elements, including the cavity in the spacer for receiving the button and the adjacent braze washers, will not affect the attenuation band of the tube.
