Abstract:An analog to digital circuit assembly includes a circuit for multiplexing a reference voltage input of an analog to digital converter to produce alternating normalized and referenced digital outputs of an analog signal input at a rate controlled by a sampling clock which includes a switch including first and second inputs, an output, and a control input for alternately connecting the first and the second inputs to the output, the output being applied to the reference voltage input. An information detection device having a detection output and a servo mechanism that controls operations on detected information is provided in conjunction with a signal summing circuit, a direct current voltage reference, a control clock connected, a servo error signal circuit having a servo error signal output and input, a sampling clock, and a processing circuit having an input connected to a digital output of the analog to digital converter and an output for controlling the servo mechanism. The analog to digital circuit assembly is also implemented in an optical disc system for improved operation thereof.

Abstract:An optical disc system for storing information on a medium includes a light source, a focusing mechanism, and a tracking mechanism wherein the mechanisms are controlled by a feedback loop and the focusing mechanism focuses light emitted by the light source onto the medium to effect writing of information thereon. The system is provided with an electronic circuit for generating a servo error signal that is communicated in the feedback loop for effecting corrections of the focusing mechanism and the tracking mechanism. The system is further provided with a driver for energizing the light source, a bias coil disposed proximate to the medium, a bias coil driver switchably connected to the bias coil for supplying an electric current thereto, a current monitoring circuit connected to the bias coil driver having an output responsive to the electric current, and a controller connected to the output of the current monitoring circuit and to the driver. The controller thereby enables the driver when the output of the current monitoring circuit exceeds a predetermined magnitude so that information processed through the focusing mechanism is written onto the medium when the electric current flowing in the bias coil exceeds a threshold.

Abstract:A track seeking method is provided which relies on sampled seek information. No external sensors are employed and the seek information is intermittently stored along the tracks provided on the disk surface. In determining the actual velocity of the seek actuator, at least two methods for counting crossed tracks are utilized. Preferably, a 1/2-count method is used at lower seek velocities and a 16-count method is used at higher seek velocities. The 178 -count method involves the receipt of two counts for each track that is crossed, while the 16-count method involves counting every sixteen tracks that are crossed. The selection of the 1/2-count and the 16-count methods for counting tracks crossed results in a velocity gap region. The velocity gap region is a range of seek actuator velocities in which the servo loop is underdamped for the 16-count method and where folding occurs for the 1/2-count method. To overcome the underdamping and folding problems, various solutions have been devised.

Abstract:An optical drive system includes an objective lens subassembly for directing light from a light source toward an information storage medium. An amount of the directed lighted light is returned from the storage medium. An objective lens is disposed in the objective lens subassembly. A first servomotor moves, during focus capture, the objective lens to a first position, away from the first position toward the storage medium being read while looking for a maximum Quad Sum signal, and back away from the storage medium. An electronic control circuit is connected to the first servomotor. A servo error detector is coupled to the electronic control circuit and disposed in a path of light returning from the information storage medium. The servo error detector is implemented to determine when total light returned from the information storage medium exceeds a predetermined value, to search for a first zero crossing, corresponding to when the Quad Sum signal exceeds a predetermined amplitude, and to indicate to the electronic control circuit to direct close of focus when the Quad Sum signal exceeds the predetermined amplitude.

Abstract:A Colpitts type oscillator circuit for mitigating the effects of undesired oscillator ringing when write pulses are supplied, such as those encountered in compact disc, laser disc, and magneto-optical players or recording devices. Circuit elements are provided for mitigating the effects of oscillator ringing including replacement of an inductor with a suitable resistive load and an oscillator supply voltage maintained above a predetermined minimum voltage which is a function of the specific values of the related circuit elements. An improved optical disc system also includes the present Colpitts type oscillator in combination with an optical assembly, a laser light source, an objective lens subassembly, an objective lens, an actuator assembly, a photodetector, first and second servomotors, a source of write pulses, a first electronic circuit for controlling the servomotors, a motor for moving a respective disc, a second electronic circuit for decoding, a third electronic circuit for enabling the laser light source, a voltage supply for the oscillator, a data receiver, a data encoder, a magnetic field generator, a cartridge loading assembly for removably positioning the respective disc, and a servo error circuit for determining when light returning from the disc exceeds a predetermined value.

Abstract:An optical disc drive apparatus includes mechanics, optics, electronic circuitry, and software code for implementing a method of disc rotation. One such method includes the changing of the rotational rate of a storage medium by applying a force to the storage medium to change the rotational rate from an initial rotational rate toward a first upper limit. The first upper limit is between the initial rotational rate and a desired rotational rate. A first signal is generated when the rotational rate exceeds the first upper limit. A second signal is generated when the rotational rate exceeds a lower acceptable limit of the desired rotational rate. The application of force is then terminated. To terminate the application of force, a second upper limit may be set at an upper acceptable limit of the desired rotational rate, a lower limit may be set at the lower acceptable limit of the desired rotational rate, and the application of force may be terminated when the rotational rate is greater than the lower limit.

Abstract:A magneto-optical drive system having a computer that monitors the current in the bias coil of a magnetomotive field generator to determine when a predetermined current threshold is exceeded. Abstract:An apparatus for the suppression of electromagnetic emissions from an electronic device. The apparatus includes a die cast metallic container having a continuous wall, a shoulder formed on the continuous wall, a plurality of rounded corners, and a neck portion. The neck portion and shoulder mate with a deep drawn metallic cap. A source of electromagnetic emissions is disposed in the interior space defined by the container and the cap, and a flex strip source passes through a groove formed in an external wall of the container to supply the source. The container is adapted for use in an optical disc system and provides a mount for a semiconductor laser modulated at a radio frequency on the order of 450 MHz. The container also holds auxiliary electronics. A conductive tape seals the assembly so that electromagnetic emissions of the laser are confined within the interior space.
