Abstract:

An optical bench includes a substrate having a fiber receiving area, a lens mounting area, and a reflective area. The fiber receiving area, the lens mounting area and the reflective area are positioned linearly. The fiber receiving area includes a V-groove etched or micromachined in the substrate, wherein a length of optical fiber cable is inserted in the V-groove to facilitate alignment of optical fiber cable towards the lens mounting area. The lens mounting area includes first support members for supporting a lens positioned to facilitate directing of light from the optical fiber cable towards the reflective area. The reflective area includes a planar mirror and second support members, wherein the second support members support a diode positioned above the planar mirror, wherein the planar mirror is positioned in a slanted angle to facilitate directing of light from the lens to the diode.

Abstract:

System and method for evaporating moisture from a gap defined between a heat transfer tube surrounding a repair sleeve in a nuclear steam generator. The nuclear steam generator has a heat transfer tube surrounding a repair sleeve that has been hydraulically expanded into engagement with the tube. The tube and the sleeve define a gap therebetween having moisture residing therein. The system includes an air compressor in communication with the gap for supplying air to the gap and a dryer in communication with the air compressor for drying the gas supplied to the gap. A heater in communication with the air compressor may also be provided for heating the air supplied to the gap, so that the moisture residing in the gap evaporates into the heated air. A vacuum pump in communication with the gap may be provided for decreasing the pressure of the heated air in the gap, so that substantially all the moisture evaporates from the gap and into the heated air.

Abstract:

Apparatus for expanding tubular members, such as U-shaped heat transfer tubes having ends thereof located in the confined space adjacent the curved sides of the bowl-shaped lower plenum of a typical nuclear steam generator. The apparatus includes an elongate mandrel having a flow channel therethrough in communication with a resilient tubular bladder surrounding the mandrel. The bladder is flexible about its longitudinal axis due to the ribbed construction of the wall thereof. The mandrel includes a plurality of segments, adjacent ones of the segments interconnected by a ball-and-socket joint therebetween, so that the segments swivel about respective ones of the ball-and-socket joints. In this manner, the mandrel flexes as it is inserted into the tube end located in the confined space defined by the sides of the bowl-shaped lower plenum of the steam generator. The mandrel also flexes as it traverses the upper U-bend portion of the tube.

Abstract:

System and method for in situ testing of the leak-tightness of a tubular member, which tubular member may be a nuclear steam generator heat transfer tube. The system includes a mandrel insertable into the tube, the mandrel having a pair of spaced-apart expandable bladders surrounding the mandrel. A first channel extends through the mandrel and is in communication with the bladders. A fluid supply circuit is in fluid communication with the first channel for supplying pressurized liquid to the bladders so that the bladders radially expand into sealing engagement with the inner diameter of the tube. As the bladders expand into sealing engagement with the tube, a sealed annular chamber is defined therebetween bounded by the bladders and the inner diameter of the tube. A second channel also extends through the mandrel, the second channel being in fluid communication with the fluid supply circuit at one end thereof and in communication with the chamber at the other and thereof in order to pressurize the chamber with the liquid. A controller is connected to the fluid supply circuit for measuring the flow rate of the liquid flowing through the fluid supply circuit to the chamber.

Abstract:

A transceiver is adapted for communication with another transceiver over a common channel by a technique that allows both transceivers to be identical in manufacture and use. The technique avoids designating one transceiver the "master" and the other the "slave", by relying on random time differences between transmissions during a start-up period that initially establishes communications. The transmissions are typically in multi-bit packets. An example using an optical transceiver having a light emitting diode used for both optical transmission and optical detection is given, wherein the channel is an optical fiber.

Abstract:

System and method for hydraulically expanding tubular members, such as heat transfer tubes and sleeves of the type found in nuclear steam generators. The system includes a resilient ribbed bladder for radially expanding the tube or tubular sleeve that is to be disposed in the tube. The system further includes a pressurizer hydraulically connected to the bladder for supplying pressurized hydraulic fluid to the bladder in order to expand the bladder into intimate engagement with the sleeve and/or tube. The system also includes a controller electrically connected to the pressurizer for controllably operating the pressurizer. The system may further include a fluid supply reservoir fluidly connected to the pressurizer for supplying fluid to the pressurizer and may also include visual display means electrically connected to the controller for displaying the pressure acting on the bladder during the expansion process. The ribbed structure of the bladder allows the bladder to radially expand over a larger diameter without rupture of the bladder and also allows the bladder to expand relatively short axial sections of the tube and/or sleeve.
