Abstract:

A method for manufacturing a catheter assembly including a handle, a guide tube having a proximal end engaged with the handle, and a distal end assembly engaged with a distal end of the guide tube. The method includes applying an active electrode element on the distal end assembly by a process selected from the group consisting of electroplating, vapor deposition, IBAD and pad printing, and applying a regenerated cellulose coating over the distal end assembly. The regenerated cellulose coating is applied by applying a viscous liquid coating to the catheter distal end assembly, regenerating the viscous coating, and then curing the regenerated coating. The cured coating is preferably hydrated.

Abstract:

Systems and methods for diagnosing and treating tissue transmit an electrical energy pulse that temporarily stuns a zone of tissue, temporarily rendering it electrically unresponsive. The systems and methods sense an electrophysiological effect due to the transmitted pulse. The systems and methods alter an electrophysiological property of tissue in or near the zone based, at least in part, upon the sensed electrophysiological effect. The alteration of the electrophysiological property can be accomplished, for example, by tissue ablation or by the administration of medication. In a preferred implementation, radio frequency energy is used to both temporarily stun tissue and to ablate tissue through a common electrode.

Abstract:

Systems and methods examine heart tissue morphology using three or more spaced apart electrodes, at least two of which are located within the heart in contact with endocardial tissue. The systems and methods transmit electrical current through a region of heart tissue lying between selected pairs of the electrodes, at least one of the electrodes in each pair being located within the heart. The systems and methods derive the electrical characteristic of tissue lying between the electrode pairs based, at least in part, upon sensing tissue impedances. The systems and methods make possible the use of multiple endocardial electrodes for taking multiple measurements of the electrical characteristics of heart tissue. Multiplexing can be used to facilitate data processing. The systems and methods also make possible the identification of regions of low relative electrical characteristics, indicative of infarcted tissue, without invasive surgical techniques.

Abstract:

A medical system for limiting usage of a medical probe, such as, e. g. , a catheter or surgical probe, is provided. The medical system includes a medical probe that includes electronic storage componentry for storage of data. The medical system further includes a control unit to which the medical probe is connected. The control unit is configured for writing and reading data to and from the electronic storage componentry of the medical probe when the medical probe is connected to the control unit. The control unit includes a clock that generates a time signal, which is used to determine an initial probe usage time and a reference time. The control unit further includes a control circuit that writes the initial probe usage time to the electronic storage componentry of the medical probe when the medical probe is initially operated. During a subsequent procedure, the control circuit reads the initial probe usage time from the electronic storage componentry. The control circuit determines an elapsed probe usage time based on the initial probe usage time and the reference time.
